can anybody tell me roughly how much it might cost to replace carpeting on a stairway (14 stairs) with hardwood flooring with a carpet runner type thing going up the center? Just curious, may spend tax return on this. thanks

You need the rise over run measurements and then any platforms the dimentions of that, the price per sq foot of carpet then price per sq foot of runner, normally prob 800 -1000 normal depending on carpeting could be a lot less depending

I did this last year. I have 15 steps. We decided to replace the carpet on the stairs. So we go and price it all out and make arrangements for them to come and do the job. We agreed I would pull up the old carpet and any staples.

A day before they were to come I strip the stairs only to find out the stairs are solid oak. So we talk it over and decide to re-finish the stairs and put a runner up the middle instead.

Called the shop, came out and re-measured for the new job.

We did the hard part of sanding and staining the stairs. They showed up and did the carpet.

It cost us $385.00. For that price they rolled the edge over and secured it thru the folds of the rolled over area. It would have cost another $190.00 if they put a finished edge on the carpet instead of the rolled edge.

I asked their opinion of the rolled edge vs the finished edge. They suggested the rolled edge for cost and the appearance in case the finished edge was not perfectly straight...

End result, turned out very nice...

This was a good question as I have been thinking about the same thing. If there are any more pictures of the end result would be great too. Thanks

You want to change to hardwood on the stair? I beleive its $40-60/stair, its not cheap, because of the nosing... removal of the previous substrate will cost too, then the carpet on top of that.... Id say you are in the 1200 range?

ive never done it, but I do know they charge 100$ per stair here Canadian. For the supply/install of the hardwood...

Here is how mine turned out...
