I have an 02 with 72,000 miles I have noticed that the temp gauge will rise until the check gauge light comes on. This happens only whe at a stand still. I can also her the egine rev a little and the a/c temp will change. As soon as I start to drive the gauge will go back to the normal range and will stay there as long as the trac is moving. This will happen even after shortly starting up and letting the egine run for a min or so.

I do have the habit of sitting in the trac with the egine running and listening to music, I also have a remote start which I use all the time and the last things done to the trac engine wise was the seafoam project.

I have since changed the thermostat, to no avail I still have the issue. Any help to resolve the issue is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Are you sure the engine isn't getting hot?

Sounds like the clutch fan is bad or missing.

Fan moves air. No fan, no moving air. When you drive, air moves.

if the new t-stat is not bad, you could have air in the system, a radiator that is partially clogged, bad rad cap, failing water pump, OR the fan clutch is shot.

I just ran 2 remote start cycles=24min the fan continued to run. It did this with the old one as well. I guess I will get the radiator flushed and see if that helps.

Can a bad hose cause this? I believe I just saw what looks like dried liquid on the lower hose.

Thanks again

the clutch fan may spin but may not move enough air to cool the engine...

with the truck warmed up but OFF, DO NOT HAVE IT RUNNING!!!! spin the fan with your hand... Does it spin freely or have some resistance ???

If you may have never flushed the cooling system you would be amazed at what is in there and needing to be removed. I had this happen on a camaro once. I had changed the coolant but did not flush out the block and it still overheated. I had to dump the new fluid and flush out the block. Then it ran fine.

ScoTt '01,

When you had this happen to your Camaro. Did it heat up while sitting then cool off when you started to move?

I had an odd instance. My, then, girlfriend had a 1980 Mercury Zephyr. When running on the highway, or over 45 MPH, the engine would overheat. Sitting in traffic, it would run nice and cool.

The radiator has corroded to the point where all that was left were the slats. The smaller fins were gone. I guess after 13 years and 280,000 miles, it was time for a replacement radiator.

It's been narrowed down to the fan clutch, I will get it taken care of on tomorrow.

Thanks to all who chiped in. As it would be the fan clutch was bad. Honestly I knew nothing about a fan clutch, thansk to you guys now I do.

Thanks you
