Well I took my ST back into the dealer today to have them check the squeak again. This time I was armed with the TSB that Yardsale posted the link to for me. I didn't pull it out until after I took the tech for a ride in it to hear the sound again (the one he heard the day before, but could not duplicate after I left). He had diagnosed it as coming from the left rear wheel. I told him to stand on the side of the street whioe I drove by. He then said it was coming from the front. I pulled out the TSB and showed him. He already knew about it he said, but they were troublshooting the back yseterday, not the front. Turns out it was the shop manager I was talking to and heard the noise with me. I asked him about how much to replace the dust seals mentioned on the TSB. He said he would send out his Ford specialist to talk to me about it. The person who came out was the nicest mechanic I have ever met. His name was Craig (If you ever go to Freedom Linc/Merc in Chesapeake, VA, ask for him!)
He laid down on the groud right there and showed me right where the problem is at. He said it would be about 300 to replace boths sides (the parts are $23.17 each), but told me to spray some lithium grease in from behind right where the CV axle goes into the front hub. Fixed the problem and saved me 300 bucks. Said he has seen the same problem several times. It just seemed strange to talk to someone that worked in a Ford shop trying to save me money and time by telling me how to fix it. We then talked about my slotted rotors for a while (he wants some for his mustang) and I asked about putting disc brakes all the way around. He suggested that I find a wrecked Expy in a junkyard with them and get the whole rear axle assembly and do the swap. I must say he was the coolest Ford mechanic I have met. Someone who actually cares abou this job. I will be asking for him from now on!!
