It's an "okay" deal. My 04 XLT Premium listed for just over $31k and I took her off the lot for just over $23k...that was Summer of 04.

Go to KBB.com and see the used prices. Though it is new to them, and new to you, it is still almost 2 years old.

P.S. I just checked...A used 2005 ST with 100 miles in excellent condition has a KBB private-party price of almost $21K, and a "new dealer price" of $23.4K

I would try to go a little lower. Your sweet spot is $21K. Offer them $20K, deal done, papers signed the same day. Make the offer OVER THE PHONE and tell them to call back only if they accept. Then, they will call back if they will accept OR if they are going to make some serious counter offer.

Good luck.

Wife just traded in her '05 XLS with 21,000 miles, excellent shape, and the dealer,

Sloan Ford in Columbia, TN., has it on the lot for $19,990.TJR has good advice.

If you can get a "new", as in never sold/titled, for $20k-$21k with a full warranty, that doesn't sound like a bad deal. Being an ASE Mechanic, however, I would offer the following

suggestions... Have them check and or change all of the major fluids, and do a full

check of the battery, etc... If it has sat on the dealer lot for almost two years, now,

I think these items should be addressed, as this trac has basically been in storage

for two years. It will cost the dealer approxamately $50 to $60 dollars, their cost,

to do this for you, and their acceptance or refusal to do this may give you an idea of

the integrity of the dealer, shoul you decide to buy, and future problems arise!

Hope this helps! :)

Guys, read his post again. Sounds like it is a new Trac, though an '05. Note he even listed the MSRP price (Manufacturers Sugested Retail Price) in his post. I think that sounds like a good deal for a brand new vehicle. Since it is brand new, the warranty coverage starts when he buys the Trac.

Here is why I think it is brand new.

I read all that Caymen, thanks. Yes, I said it would be new to him, and new to the dealer, but nonetheless, it is a two year old vehicle, so IMHO, it is not "brand new", regardless if it has never been registered, or even if it has never had more than 10 or 20 miles on it.

Tracnblack just cautioned to make sure it was never titled before, but as you say, Caymen, it seems like that isn't the case. For all intents and purposes from a warranty standpoint, it is a new vehicle and will get 36K or 36 months, whichever comes first.

But, it isn't "brand new" and shouldn't cost anywhere near MSRP, and a GOOD indication of what it should cost is the figures I got from KBB...between $21K and $23.4K. The dealer is dropping about $900 off the kbb dealer price, and I think they can go more. The fact that the vehicle has sat on the lot for this long (or some lot) should make the dealer very incented.

I would offer $20K...try to bargain towards $21K. If nothing else that strategy will see how firm the $22.5K is.

it is a two year old vehicle

Very true, with a warranty good for 3 years/36,ooo miles from the date of purchase. In all purposes, it is a new vehicle. It qualifies for "new vehicle" intrest rates and everything. It is a new vehicle. The only downside is the depreciation of buying a new vehicle that is 2 years old on the books. For people like me that keeps a vehicle for the next 10 years, resale values don't mean squat to me. When I am done with them, they are ready for the junk yard.

Tom

Right, Tom, its the depreciation of the vehicle that's the hit, and why I think the dealer can still go a little lower.

The dealer and Ford have written off the vehicle, more or less, I suspect. Any buyer looking at it should go in with the attitude that they are "doing the dealer a favor by taking it off their hands...at almost any price!"

BTW...$1500 (the difference between $21K and $22.5K), across 60 months is $25/month...a lot more if you don't assume 0% interest. And, that's not even taking into account the taxes on that $1500.

I am ruthless when I buy a new vehicle. I go to KBB, I go to Edmunds, I enter zipcodes for some of the cheapest COL areas in the country, and then I make it my personal lot in life to UNDERCUT the lowest prices I find, to get allowances for options I don't want, to get them to drop misc fees and charges (like destination, etc), and pretty much just make the sales guy life hell. And, I do it ALL over the phone, though again and again the sales guy asks "why don't you just come in?"

Does anyone agree about the fluids/storage point though?

I'd appreciate your opinions on this TJR and Caymen!

By the way I didn't even think about the "Built -In Depreciation" factor, I guess you

would call it!

Learn smoething new every day...:D

Absolutely, tracnblack. I would want the vehicle gone over with a fine tooth comb and have all the fluids changed....I might even request a new battery.

TJR

it's also a 4x4 forgot to mention.

tracnblack yes i agree with u 100% i've been around cars for 4 years right now i'm fixing a 67 mustang that sat in a garage for 4 years. i kno wut time does first hand lol. i didn't really get into it cuz i just wanted a price to work wit but i'd check the build date then work him down then have the oil, trans, transfer etc...

Look at the build date on the sticker. It could have been built as late as March 06, and then you would not have to worry about the fluids, battery, etc.
