went to Pep-boys to get new tires, when they replaced them they broke off one of my TPS sensors. took it back to them to have them replace it and they couldnt figure out how to reset the computer. So i called the local dealer and they want $56.00 to do it. Is there a way that I can do it myself? If Not, What should I do? Take it back to Pep-boys and tell them to fix it?:angry::banghead:

Not sure if this works, but maybe disconnect your battery for 30+ minutes, then reconnect? It will reset your computer, not sure about your tire sensors. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I will chime in.

Disconnecting the battery will not resolve, though it may cancel your radio presets.

Steve is on the right track from my experience...

Here is what I have done:

On then off with the key 3 times, depress the brake pedal, followed by On then Off with the key 3 times ending in the On position (NOT RUN). This took several tries for me to get the sequence down right.

Your dash menu should display a message "reset LF Tire" or something similar. You then have 30 seconds to go out and place either a magnet or the proper tire reset tool near the tpms (sensor).

The horn will beep once if successful, then you can go over and do RF tire, then RR, then LR. If the reset fails (trying the magnet trick), the horn will beep twice. You would then have to start the key process all over.

A guy on the Explorer forum had listed the steps that I followed though while the dash display prompt and horn beeps I can attest to, I did not have luck using a magnet (though some have).

Some larger tire store chains may have the proper reset tool and be a little cheaper than the dealer.

There are reset tools I found on the Internet and eBay but they get a little pricey ($84 to $179+) unless you want to charge your friends to re-coop the cost.

Tool brands I found:

Bartec Wheelrite Tool - 300, 300+, 400+ models

OTC TIPS TPM Reset Tool OTC003D

www.fordtpms.com has a chart up to 2008 that I saw indicating what ford models have band strap tpms or schrader valve tpms. If you have a band strap tpms and its installed properly it should be located 180 degrees opposite the valve stem.

Hope this helps a little. My sensor failure is sporadic. Until it annoys me enough to go to a local tire store that has the right reset tool, I check tire pressure once a week and am living with the beep and dash message for now.

Good luck.

Joe M... Don't forget to stand on your left leg while tapping your head and rubbing your belly at the same time! :banghead:

Just take it back to Pep Boys and insist that they fix it. Any shop (especially a big chain like Pep Boys) should have the electronic tool required to reset/recalibrate the TPMS sensors with your car.

If they say they don't have one, then make them pay for it to be done at the Ford dealer. Bottom line: They broke it, they should take full responsibility and fix it, no matter what it takes.

JustJimmy - I wouldn't have believed it until I tried the steps. I think if I did what you said it might have worked for me. I knew I missed some important steps. :fire:

I agree with TrainTrac.

My motive to explaining the cumbersome process was to insinuate there isn't really a cheap and easy solution. If I'd have been in the room with the Ford Engineer that decided on and designed the steps to reset the tpms I would have... :smack:

My '02 ST doesn't have TPMS but my 08 E250 does. Once the proper pressure is restored the lamp goes out by itself. Since the front & rear pressures are different on the van I do have to retrain them every time the tires are rotated. The van came with a reset tool like the one in the link.

But agreed, it the 'Boys broke it, they need to fix it at whatever cost.
