This might sound like a dumb guestion but whats the difference in a 255/70/16 tire and a 245/75/16 tire? And would it fit the stock wheel on a 04 4x4?

Here is some cut and paste info for you; (THE BOTTOM LINE IS MORE TARGETED TO YOUR QUESTION).

TIRE TECH PAGE

First number (195 or 205) is the overall width of the tire, not the tread width.

Second number (65 or 60) is the aspect ratio. The sidewall is 60% (or 65% or...) as tall as the tire is wide.

Third number is wheel size.

As a tire gets a lower aspect ratio, the tread gets wider, so a 195/60 will have a wider tread than a 195/70.

Figure out tire diameter as follows:

width * (aspect ratio * 2) / 2540 + wheel size

A 205/60/14 is only about 1% shorter than a 195/65/14 but will have a wider tread width.

the 255-70-16 has a diameter of approx 30.1 inches and is approx 7.6 inches wide

the 245-75-16 has a diameter of approx 30.5 inches and a witdh of approx 7.3 inches

so the 245-75-16will be slightly taller and slightly skinner than the 255-70-16...

tire sizer ar slightly different by manufacturer..

it will definately fit on stock wheels...

here is the formula from tire racks web site

Width x Aspect Ratio = Section Height

Section Height x 2 = Combined Section Height

Combined Section Height + Wheel Diameter = Tire Diameter

Example: 185/60R14 85H or 185/60HR14

185mm x .60=111mm

111mm x 2=222mm

222mm + 355.6mm(14")= 577.6mm or 22.74"

The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall. To convert to inches, divide by 25.4 In the example above, the width is 185mm or 7.28".

The second number is the aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall height to width. In the example above, the tire is 7.28" wide, multiply that by the aspect ratio to find the height of one sidewall. In this case, 185x0.60=111mm or 7.28"x0.60=4.36".

The last number is the diameter of the wheel in inches.

To figure the outside diameter of a tire, take the sidewall height and multiply by 2,(remember that the diameter is made up of 2 sidewalls, the one above the wheel, and the one below the wheel) and add the diameter of the wheel to get your answer.

Andrew: I have a 04 ST also & i put 265/60s on mine, but they are 18 inch wheels. No problem with the fit.... You can check out how they look in the ST of the week section. Just click on my name ( Martin Luckett )....

So...could I put 305/60/16 on my stock wheels? I have 255/70/16 now so it would be slightly taller and wider right? [Broken External Image]:

I guess what I'm really wondering is if my stock wheels will be ok with a wider tire on it. I don't even know what the wheel width is.

i do not beleive you'll get a 305 (approx 11-12 inch wide tire on a 7.5 inch rim.. rim will need to be 10-11 inches wide... i highly doubt you'll find a 305x60x16 anyway.. maybe in a 20 or 22...
