First off let me say thanks to all that gave advise last night. Couldn't reply due to the fact that I was using some of the advise and it took alot of my time.

RichardL= I have the beta verison of thier antispyware and love it by the way. Also have run spybot S&D and nothing shows up. I did "google" and got to check out a list of what is starting up and took alot off. Very helpful. But still has a very long "pause" before my Antivirus, spyware, and Internet connections load up. I did notice that on the first page of msconfig it has "selective start up" checked and not "normal startup". Anything there?

I also have no idea about "partitions". That is over my head and sorry to get everyone in a uproar about weither they were helpful or not. I have no clue how to do that, so no help there unless I get something to do it or explain it better. Sorry.

Thanks again to everybody. This site and everyone on it is great.;)

Don't apologize stone, the debate about partitions is just that. Debate is good and sharing opinions is how we all learn things, as long as it stays civil and doesn't turn into a peeing contest than all is good.

As for your long pause, reboot the PC fresh, hold down F8 and you will get a screen asking if you want to boot into one of the Safe Modes. Select the Safe Mode that includes "...with Networking", and take note of how long the PC takes to load and give you the low res, safemode desktop.

Either it will be a faster startup (and settle-down) than the normal mode or about the same. If it is about the same, you probably have tuned the best you can and your system is taking as long as it takes to load all the apps/services and there isn't anything you can do.

If the times are different and the safe mode settles down so much faster, than keep plugging...there is some app or service that is causing the slowdown (or a bunch of them), and MAYBE you can remove some more.

Thanks TJR for the fast response. You are correct for I have booted in safe mode before and not to much difference. Thanks, that was what I was figuring but thought I'd get some opinions. It's not a real problem, just a nuisence.;)

Even though I haven't attempted any of the fixes yet, and won't until I get home from our honeymoon this coming week, I have to echo stonemiser's appreciation! I can't wait to try to clean some of this stuff up!

My mom recently purchased a new computer because hers had bogged down so badly. I can't help but wonder if it was just all the crap that a) came with it, and b) she added over the time she had it, whether she even knew she had added it or not...

Thanks everyone!!!!!

stonemiser,

If you have the MS Anti-Spyware and SpyBot S&D, and you do not have any viruses or unneeded/unused applications loading, then I would suspect you may need to clean up and defrag your harddrive. If you go to Accessories/System tools/disc cleanup, and rund the cleanup it will remove all the old temp files and trash off your system.

Then you can run a Defrag from the same Accessories/Sustem Tools menu.

Give it a try and keep us posted.
