When I used to tow my travel trailer, I used these mirrors:

I stick this out the window when backing:

I used to use mirrors, but they vibrate too much. I only use them when i am on the interstate for long trips. My trailer is only 7'6" wide, so it isn't too hard to see around. The camera ideais a good idea, I may try that myself.....

Okay, my sincere answer is this:

I don't need them unless backing. When I know I'm going to be backing, I look carefully at the area where I'll be backing into, and memorize where things are and the path I want the trailer to take. I then make sure to back in at an angle and I use whichever mirror is on the acute angle side to back the whole thing up. No external trailers mirrors.

The problem I had with the slide-on mirrors was that one of them slid off at 60 mph! Even before it departed the truck, there was a lot of vibration on them, and it made it hard to see out of them.

That's why I looked for something more, and found the McKesh mirrors. Rock solid and they give a lot more view behind the trailer.

I've used the E-Trailer mirrors that Dick referred to while towing my 27 foot travel trailer behind by Expedition. They worked great and never fell off or vibrated to the point of not being able to see. Made backing easier and changing lanes MUCH safer.

I've seen plenty of McKesh mirrors in use over the years, especially by heavy users.

A little much for me, though. Here's a link:
