Good article, although I wouldn't say that they do not make a good vehicle. They are still ranked 5th in comaparison to Ford's 13th place. On a positive note, they did express that Ford is making year over year improvements which shows a positive trend...

The article also says that Fords quality is more consistant that Toyota. So one Toyota may be good, while another is garbage.

I own a Lexus that is Toyota built. One of the very best vehicles I have ever owned. I have 93,000 miles on it. At 92,000 miles I put on new rear brakes, still have the original front brakes. Also at 92,000 miles I put on the first replacement set of tires, (rotated them every oil change, use synthetic oil, change it every 7000 miles).

I have no complaints.

My daughter drives in 1 1/2 years. I plan on giving her the car and buying another Lexus...

And, this site alone has proven one Trac is great and the other may be garbage. I don't have to read an article for proof when EVERY car manufacturer has this issue.

SST,

I am talking about product lines. While one Toyota model may be perfect, another model may be garbage.

Follow what I am saying?

Wrong, the article is saying that while Ford is consistant in it's quality improvements, yet they are still BEHIND Toyota and several other imports.

I hear ya Coastie.....I'll buy my wife a Lexus in a heart beat when it's time to replace her Infiniti.:)

Let's see, they slipped to fifth, in part because they got passed by--THEMSELVES. (Scion). Sorry, that's a non-story. Particularly when coming from CR.

Just when I was thinking of going to Toyota.

If my 07 ST is better quality than Toyota, I think I will give up driving.

My 07 ST sucks big time for all kinds of reasons.

A friend was going through ball joints and tires every 11K in a Solara. Turned out to be something with the frame. I guess it had something to do with the earily production models. Toyota actually bought the car back from her at 93K. 6 sets of tires and ball joints. She didn't have to hire an attorney or anything. They handed her a check after months of complaining and Toyota eating the warrenty costs. She ended up getting an 7 series BMW.

The problem with these "Reliability Surveys" or "Initial Quality Surveys" is they only measure the vehicles reliability or service record for the first 6 months to a yea, and then predict how the vehicle will perform throughout it's usefull life.

The problem with this method of judging quality is that once these few glitches are worked out, there may be little if any problems for many thousands of miles.

I believe that Toyota and Honda vehicles are better engineered using better quality materials. That will create a better and mor reliable vehicle over it's long usefull life. That is not to say that there cannot ever be a defective part made, or that some assembly line worker did not properly tighten a bolt or something.

In 1990, I bought a new Honda Accord, which was rated on of the most reliable vehicles on the road. However I had it in the shop 4 or 5 times the first month for a bad AC unit and a heater/AC dash control that broke. About 3 years later the vehicle was recalled due to a bad distributor (they call it an igniter). and about 8 years later I had to have the wiring harness replaced. Dispite these problems, I still own the vehicle with 150K miles, and am looking into restoring it back to like new condition.

I think Ford builds vehicles lile the Sport Trac with just enough quality to get through the initial warranty period. A good example is the 5-speed Automatic transmissions we have in our Sport Trac's. They have a very bad reputation for breaking between 50K and 70K- miles.

I will admit that I have had 2 Sport Trac's over the past 7+ years and have had very good service from them, but then I have never gone past 42K miles with either??

Just my opion.

...Rich
