The problem with these "Reliability Surveys" or "Initial Quality Surveys" is they only measure the vehicles reliability or service record for the first 6 months to a yea, and then predict how the vehicle will perform throughout it's usefull life.
The problem with this method of judging quality is that once these few glitches are worked out, there may be little if any problems for many thousands of miles.
I believe that Toyota and Honda vehicles are better engineered using better quality materials. That will create a better and mor reliable vehicle over it's long usefull life. That is not to say that there cannot ever be a defective part made, or that some assembly line worker did not properly tighten a bolt or something.
In 1990, I bought a new Honda Accord, which was rated on of the most reliable vehicles on the road. However I had it in the shop 4 or 5 times the first month for a bad AC unit and a heater/AC dash control that broke. About 3 years later the vehicle was recalled due to a bad distributor (they call it an igniter). and about 8 years later I had to have the wiring harness replaced. Dispite these problems, I still own the vehicle with 150K miles, and am looking into restoring it back to like new condition.
I think Ford builds vehicles lile the Sport Trac with just enough quality to get through the initial warranty period. A good example is the 5-speed Automatic transmissions we have in our Sport Trac's. They have a very bad reputation for breaking between 50K and 70K- miles.
I will admit that I have had 2 Sport Trac's over the past 7+ years and have had very good service from them, but then I have never gone past 42K miles with either??
Just my opion.
