has anyone looked into getting a turbocharger on their gen 1 trac... as a future project im considering getting one to have a little extra power under the hood... especially since im gonna be trying to turn 35s and possibly towing a boat or camper while doing so... also if i did go with a turbo would it be necessary to regear from 4.10 to 4.56 or would the extra torque be enough to negate that expense? if i did get the turbo i would of course talk to torrie about getting a tune for my setup or going to a local tuning shop with a dyno and getting it done there.

No one makes turbo kit for the trac.

There is a supercharger kit, from explorer express. Not worth the gain for the $$,$4k IMO.

Go to, explorerexpress.com

Theymay not sell it anymore. you may have to look at the 4.0L 95 to 01 explorer.

Eddie- I think you meant "there used to be" a supercharger kit.

Oops, you beat me by two minutes this time. :banghead:

If you're really offloading with your ST, you can't beat the instant torque of a supercharger. If your dead set on a turbo, it probably won't be massive. If your 35s are for show and you don't take her off pavement, try an STS setup.

You will need to start with supporting mods or your going to break stuff left and right.

I always found lightningrodder.com to be an awesome resource for planning FI builds.

The money you spend on this could be put down on an F150 though! :)

I was investigating a kit from STS Turbo last year. They have a "universal" rear mount system. I was looking for a small boost (3 psi?) to overcome the altitude here in Colorado. I think it would work but I didn't feel comfortable with their customer support on this project. I believe it be a good project for someone with access to a dyno & tuner. There could be a potential for a kit for all of us also!!

These kits appear to be for the 4.0L 'stang.

You might be able to mod it.

They used to sell the kit for Tracs.

These priced are out ragous, IMO.

You will definitely want to regear. I take it you're running 3.73 right now? I run 4.10s with 35s and its only ok. I'd say go 4.56 since you have to regear anyway.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong because I know very little about these engines but I have a buddy that is great with automotive work (does restorations on the side on referral). He does mostly Chevy so he admitted he wasn't sure about it but he thought that a supercharger for a Ford 3.8L would work on the 4.0L. This was before I even knew there was a OHV 4.0 and maybe that's what he was talking about if not the SOHC. Either way, I don't know and never really researched it. For the initiated, or bored, that might be something to look into.

Realistically, though, regearing and a proper tune will do more for you than a supercharger, especially dollar for dollar. The power is already there. The 4.0L SOHC is not a weak V6. The ST just isn't set up for running 35s like some of the crazy people around here.

You may want to go 4.88 if you'll be towing on 35s.

Hugh is right. Taller heavy tires and wheels. Can realy take performance and handling down hill. On any vehicle.

I have had some of my 'stang buddies not think about. The weight of the 18' to 20" wheels, they installed. Then they complain about loss of power and sloppy cornering.

When I uped my 16" to 17" on my '94 'stang. I went to a 2 peice wheel. The center was light weight cast. The rim was rolled aluminum sheet.

Tire shops were amazed. Without the tire you could pick the rim up with 2 fingers.

Even with a gear change with heavy tall tires. You only gain the take off umph back. Midrange power is still lost. So the best compensation is more motor or a power adder, with gears.
