My upcoming oil change is due in about 1000km

Ive been using Penzoil Full Synthetic.

Should i stick with that or go with the Motorcraft synthetic blend?

what would you recommend?

what company makes motorcraft oil?

im driving a 2001 with 164k

I would keep using the Pennzoil. I have gotten many used oil analysis on my family's vehicles and always got the lowest wear metals ppm with Pennzoil Platinum. That said, Motorcraft oil didn't test a lot worse and costs half as much so I use it in my wife's car.

Motorcraft oil is made by Conoco-Phillips.

I have given up on the hype and just gone with the morotcraft synthetic blend and a motorcraft filter - 2001 2WD with 86,000 miles. It is half the price of a full synthetic oil / premium filter and with 164k miles, you are obviously taking care of the engine. Why toss the other $20 - 25 down the drain every oil change?

I ran my 1994 escort 175,000 miles on fram atomic orange filters (one of the worst i now find out) and house brand (pep boys, Kragen, etc) 10w30 for years. The head / valve train looked brand new and burned zero oil when I sold it. Worst mistake I ever made. I should have kept it.

I love old cars! Don't give a dam where I part it or what happens to it. And you know what, my wifes 2006 Accord has been hit 3 times, received numerous door dings, etc. usually right after we get it back from the body shop. I tell her to let it go and let it look well used, and suddelny people stay away. You drive in a new or freshly repaired car and her in Southern California there must be a bullseye on the car that I can't see. Every dope on the road heads right for you!

Viva le clunker!

I have been using castrol full syn and k&n filter. Im 1500 miles from a 10K oil change. I have my sample bottle from blackstone labs.

I will post the results on the board. I dont think anyone has ever posted about castrol full syn.

I've been running Royal Purple full syn with a K&N filter. Drive about 10k miles. I just changed mine this past weekend. I've been doing this for the whole life of the truck and I am currently at 140k miles.

So there you have it:

You can either run the basic oil change package - no-name oil and a cheapo filter and go at least 175,000 miles with absoloutley no issues - $20 at most every 5,000 miles

or

You can run a super premium/super premium setup with changes at 10,000 miles for about, what $40 or $50 per change? I used to run Mobile 1 only becasue I got lazy and only wanted to change once a year.

On a cost per mile driven basis they are the same if you change the oil yourself. If you have someone else do it, $15 - 30 dollars more per change, sepending on where you do it.

It is a wash.

Lubrication related failures are darn near a thing of the past with improved oils.

Whatever makes you feel best.

Your full of your self.

You cant take what is said here as complete gospel. I will depend on the experts opinions.

As such my Uncle who worked in lubrication research for Chevron/Texaco and shell at one time. They put speced motors on the street and in labs. Testing not only there own lubes but competitors.

To long of a story to tell you the normal and extreme conditions, and the wear and tear and failures.

He retired before Royal Purple became popular(so he cant comment it). He did say the best results were from redline syn. That included cost of operation and wear and tear.

Stick with whatever you are currently using. If it works so far, don't change your routine. Shortly after I got mine, I switched it over to Mobil1 and a Mobil1 oil filter. The filter, mainly because it is made from a synthetic material and its pore size is very uniform, as compared to paper elements. Bob

I am doing the same as Bob C. right now since I want to run the oil for the 7500 miles that Ford says you can, and get a UOA. Need a filter that will go for 7500 without making me a nervous wreck when it passes 5000 miles. Using Mobil 1 0w-30 Fuel Economy Formula. The 5000 mile UOA was fine.

AFAIK, the only filters with a synthetic filter media (as opposed to paper) are the Mobil 1 and K&N.

If Royal Purple / Mobile One were that good, FedEx/UPS/trucking companies would be using them in all their OTH, LongHaul and Delivery trucks. When you run that many vehicles, that many miles, saving even a fraction of a cent per mile would make it worth while and increase their profits. But they don't use any of that stuff - just good old dino Delvac /Delo /Rotella.

And we are talking about $100,000+ engines that regularly run over 1,000,000 miles.

Comnsumer reports taxi cab test - worst drivers, worst contitions, no wear to speak of on the parts.

Only the SEMA and manufacturers hype get these kind of products sold. You have to admire them. Royal Purple. Pure synetetic. Great, when we see areospace tolerances and temperature extremes, then it may begin to be beneficial.

Not now no matter how much kool-aid you drink.

Follow the money.

So you say that my uncle. Being a auto lube specialist, drinks koolaid and gave me a glass. "I dont think so". He has no reason to lie to me. Nor has he ever tried to steer me to any brand product. He has even told me about brands of fuels, oils and their additives, were better than the company he worked for.

He has the documentation from taxis, police cars, long haul and short haul trucking. All brands of motors put thru stress test. Lab included. Synthetics not only made for longer change intervals. Also shown less wear on parts than the best dino oils out there. Included motors intentialy put through overly extreme duty.

He dont drink kool-aid.

Real world documentation. Including cost of operation being cheaper.

He has most certainly steered me away from the snake oil out there.

thank you all for your advice, suggestions, and comments.

i will continue to use Penzoil Full Synthetic with Motorcraft filter and change every 6000km

along with tire rotation at every oil change

As I said, yes, there are benefits. Sure are. The problem is that they are not worth the cost in automotive applications, even ultra high mileage / heave use such as FedEx, etc... Yes, yes, yes, full syn = reduced wear BUT that reduced wear is not going to cost you any repair dollars or even save you enough in fuel to make up for their increased cost.

Do you realize how much of a bonus the director of maintenance for FedEx or UPS (or the US Navy - we have a lot of diesel ships now) would get if he could reduce their fuel bill 1 or 2%?

The only necessary application for class V full synthetics is areospace (gas turbines, etc) in all others on down to your lawnmower it is overkill.

better is not always better

better is not always better

i do second that to a certain extend.

that 1 or 2% might not sound like a large percentage or a big deal but when referring to the immense amount of UPS, Fed Ex or US navy like tony mention. i would assume its not so easy trying to reduce that fuel bill.

especially right now with gas rocketing sky high due to the armed forces sending 5 billion gallons of fuel to supply the war machinery since Libya, the 15th largest fuel provider in the world decided to cut out our supply to us. which in result to that we are having to pay more for gas. the U.S is sending war ships over there as we speak....there goes another war
