So I am at this guys house for an appointment (i'm an insurance adjuster). He notices my Sport Trac and immediately asks what I think of the vehicle. He then begins the walk around tour and as soon as he gets to the back wheels he starts rubbing the tire with his hands. I can see that he has noticed my tires are cupped. This is a total stranger mind you who just walked up to the vehicle. I now have to explain to him and make excuses for my brand new car with cupped tires that it is a known problem with this model that Ford has refused to remedy over the past 4-5 years. This guy says to me these tires used to be on the front didnt they. It turns out the guy used to be a mechanic and he tells me Ford has never built a good front end on any of its vehicles. My point is why am I making excuses to stangers about the defects of my 2005 Ford. My tires should not be cupped after 6500 miles. Once again I say UUUGGGHHH!!!
 
yeah, I told my buddy my tires were cupped, and he just said, "welcome to Ford Motor company." (He's a die hard ford man), but he said it's something with the front end of ford trucks that causes cupping... I dunno.
 
Ya know, I haven't had any cupping problems on my tires. I got it aligned/adjusted when I got new tires about 20k miles ago and haven't had a single problem since.
 
I got new tires and everything was fine after that. Do yourself a favour and get rid of the goodyears.
 
I never have had a wheel alignment, Never re balanced the tires, Never even rotated them... I installed my reflex shocks at 5,000 miles...I do NOT have a single tire issue other than traction.....

I just put on some rs5000s today, so I hope I don't have any more cupping issues. My crapyears, are cupped. I have 34,000 miles on them and I'm trying to make it to 40,000 before I go nuts. After that, it's some bfgoodrich all terrains for me...:D:D (and an alignment to be sure everthing's good to go)
 
Get rid of the Goodyear tires. They are the problem, not the front end. Replaced my Goodyear tires with BFG Radial Long Trail T/A and no cupping.

I had General Grabbers on my rig when I bought it, and I just put my second set of Bridgestone Dueler A/T's on last week, and had the front end alignment checked when the new rubber was put on. I have the alignment checked at least once a year, and rotate my tires every 5000 miles. I've got 80,500 miles on it. Never had a cupping issue with any of the tires either, so I'd say it's the GoodYear tires..
 
Maybe Goodyear stands for "GOOD<font size=-4>for a</font>YEAR". IMO, that is giving them too long. LOL

It's not necessarily just the Goodyears. I've got Dunlops on, and I've got cupping issues also. It may still be just the tires, but there could be other factors involved.
 
The Goodyears get a bad rap on this site. At 126,000 miles, I am on my second set with another 10K left in the tread. Never cupped, no problems.



Regarding Ford front ends - I have operated Ford trucks over the last twenty years (at least two dozen trucks) as rollback car haulers and general pickup use. I have seen NO trends regarding tire wear due to front end design. My Explorer Sport did seem to be more sensitive in this area and I might agree that Ford 4x4 front ends are a little tricky, but not the 2WD.



The secret formula for amazing tire life? Check your air pressure while you fill up (I keep my dial gauge in the door map pocket), rotate at oil changes and check alignment every now and then.
 
No cupping on my factory Michelins at 89,000 miles. I swear I'm going to get some new tires someday, but they just passed safety inspection here without even a comment. I'm starting to wonder when they'll finally wear out.
