When I needed Frances' help they were not there for me or my fellow troops. Like I said, if the Girl Scouts were playing against France, I'd be rooting for them....

I'm sure I'll get bashed for this.

I personally hate soccer so I dont really care. I'm not fond of the french either for the same reason as Kevin states. I find soccer to be an anti-American sport mainly because it is played predominantly in foreign countries. It never really caught on here until recently. It was not played when I was a kid. When they told us we had to play soccer in gym class we played once and told them we didnt like it and wanted to play something else.

I hate seeing the people in my neighborhood driving around in caravans screaming and blowing their horns with italian flags (at least for today) or any other non-American flag for that matter. I didnt see many any people driving around with American flags this past July 4th. Definately no caravans of "proud Americans" showing their support for the best country in the world. I fly an American flag on my antenna everyday. I have done so on every vehicle since I was old enough to drive. The counrty their ancesters left their country of origin to come to and have a much better life. My grand parents left italy and came here. Thank God for that!

This was not a soccer issue with me. It could have been a game of marbles for that matter.

And that is not to say ALL French are bad or anything like that. The French government put me/us in a real bad spot. People were lost (as in death) because of their decision. We banked on a promise they made my command. They decided not to follow through.

I took it personal. Maybe I shouldn't, but when you bring a friend home in a bag these things seem to stick in your mind.

I agree with CoastieJoe,,,,,,,I am not into soccer, so much, either, but as you can tell by my last name, I am of Italian heritage. I don't fly an Italian flag, only OUR flag, too,,,,,,,,,but I smiled inside when I heard that the Italians beat up on those coward's ass,,,,,,,,,just my two cents worth,,,,,,,,,on a different note, got the 07 on Friday,,,,,,,,,,pics coming soon.:D

Soccer--whats soccer?? And the french are a bunch of pansies, look at all the trouble they have gotten us into and then left the scene, jelly fish got more backbone,of coarse Italy isn't much better!!

I agree with JohnnyB - My neighorhood is mainly Italian and it's really getting annoying here. Tonight it was fun for about for the 1st half hour- people waving Italian flags and blowing car horns. Then it turned into streets being blocked off, cars speeding around with kids hanging out the windows, blowing thru red lights and just being obnoxious. Cops from all different precincts had to come in and very carefully break it all up. Last week was the same thing. The 4th of July and not 1 American flag. All Italian flags and just a bunch of obnoxious people. Oh - btw- I'm half Italian if it matters.

i was actually cheering for france. but for non-patriotic reasons. i know the whole history behind our country's relations with france, but i believe in sports that politics go out the window. i like soccer, so i just couldn't cheer for a bunch of whiney, diving, cheating (match fixing scandel in the italian league) players. though, i guess zidane's headbutt showed something about france's gamesmanship. but i guess that some people view the world cup every 4 years as a better reason to put flags out and wave flags around than the 4th of july. i dont understand that, but i guess no one here really does...

I think people give France a raw deal. I actually have been to France and had French friends in High School. The French people I've met have been very kind to me. It is true that the French lately have been a thorn in our side politically, but that is being done mostly by the French President, who isn't even popular in his own country.

How would we like for the World to view the American people? If our President was unpopular around the World, would we want everyone in the World to think we as individuals are the same as he is? I wouldn't. I would rather have people know me before they pass judgement on whether I am a good or bad person.

Also, the French government isn't the only NATO ally to leave us hanging. The Turks refused to let us enter Iraq through their country. We actually had our ships in the Mediterranean ready to enter their ports when they announced this. It cost us weeks and billions of dollars to adjust our troop locations as a result. I don't hear anyone bashing Turks here. We still support them and our Government continues to press for their entry into the European Union.

If we really have decided as a Nation that we want nothing further to do with France, then maybe we should just give back the Louisiana Purchase (quite bargain I think) and dismantle the Statue of Liberty (a gift from France on our 100th birthday). We also should rename all the places with French names, or named in honor of French people. Maybe we can call Louisville something more patriotic like Jeffersonville. Oh wait..."ville" is french too...Jefferson Village then.

This whole thing is rather silly. You don't have to hate France or fly an American Flag to be patriotic. You just have to love your country and take pride in it. Pride is a tricky thing though. If you are proud of America you don't cheat it out of income taxes. You don't live off welfare unless you are disabled. You don't break its laws. You don't litter its highways or belittle its leaders. You don't embarrass it, by acting like a jerk when you travel overseas, or bad-mouth it on television, radio and the internet. To be patriotic you have to place the needs of your country before your self-interest. John F. Kennedy had it right when he said "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

France did a heck of a job helping us in our war for independence, and we repaid them in WWI and WWII. That is what friends and allies do -- help each other in good times and bad.

You can be patriotic by calling King George III an idiot. That is what being a US Citizan is all about.

Roy, You asked... whats soccer? Well soccer is something that your kids play until they get to first grade. After first grade then they move on to football, baseball and/or basketball. :D

Jerry

Right, "manly" sports like football, baseball and/or basketball.

I fear many here would be left for dead on the pitch within the first 20 mins.

You could always take up an "anti-American" sport like lacrosse, rugby, or Aussie rules Football.

Aussie rules football! Now that's a man's sport. Makes all other sports guys look like wussies!
