Church group plans Dio protest

By WENN.COM

Ronnie James Dio's widow has urged the rocker's fans and friends not to turn on religious right protesters who plan to picket outside the late Black Sabbath and Rainbow star's memorial service in Los Angeles on May 30.

Wendy Dio, who also managed her husband's career, has released a statement in response to reports that members of the Westboro Baptist Church will protest outside her late husband's public farewell memorial service at Forest Lawn cemetery's Hall of Liberty.

She writes, "Ronnie hates prejudice and violence! We need to turn the other cheek on these people that only know how to hate someone they didn't know. We only know how to love someone we know!"

The WBC is led by pastor Fred Phillips and members of his family, who were the subject of a 2007 BBC documentary.

In a news release, Phillips claims Dio taught "rebellion against God, in the form of glorifying atheism, promoting the devil horn hand sign and other such idolatries".

Announcing the protest at the rock star's memorial, the release continues, "The arrogant God-hating fool changed his name from Padavona to Dio (meaning God in Italian)."

The release goes on to blast Dio for standing "idly by" and watching his niece become a porn star.

It concludes with "Thank God for the dead brute Dio."

At least 3 of his own kids left the church and family. They said, he is a mean sob. The kids didnt get spankings. They got beatings and other tortures from their pastor dad.

All I can say is that is not a true Christian Church. JMO. WBC, makes the church look bad and wierd, to those that dont know. wbc, Twisted they are.. With all their hatred and anger. I say equip them. Send them to fight the taliban and leave them over there..

Eddie,

I've always liked that kind of suggestion for folks that think it's appropriate to "demonstrate" at a soldier's funeral.

I forgot that he died...wasn't he touring last year? I recall seeing signs for him and several other older bands coming to B'more, when I was in there last summer.

(Relics from a time when people actually sang and played their instruments, sadly)

These nutjobs should just be ignored by the press, publicity fuels their fire.

Reminds me of the L Ron quote about "The way to make a million dollars is to start your own religion"
