I'm trying to decide between a Suburban (2000) or an Expedition (2000 or 2001).

So far this is what I've come up with:

Suburban:

Better power and more torque.(that is a major sell point for me)

Not as fond of the look but I could get used to it

More reliable-depending on which site you read or who you talk to of course.

Better resale

Lower than the Expidition.

Piston slap problems with the engine(but it doesn't seem to cause harm, just annoying from what I've read)

Expedition:

Better looks (IMO)

Newer model for same price-lower resale value

Not as much power

Worried about reliability due to problems with my Trac (that is a huge fear)

Taller than the Suburban, thus harder for the kids and short wife to get into.

So here is where I am at. I like the Ford a lot more because of the looks and some of the stock features but I'm worried about the lack of power when I have my family in the truck and loaded up with camping gear and food for a week and we try to go over the mountain. The Suburban has more power and torque but I really don't like the look of the dash of the Chevy and some of the styling as well (I can get used to it like I said before). Also, I've had to replace my engine and tranny in my Trac so Ford doesn't really have the whole "quality is job one" feeling instilled in me, I just can't afford to buy a used vehicle and have major problems with it (I know the chance is there with no matter what you buy but you may as well go with the odds and I feel that they are not in Fords favor)

I know this is my faithful Ford board but what are some unbiased opinions? Anyone have one? :D

Thanks.

Oh, I chose those two becuase of the room inside for my family. I'm also thinking of a 4 door F/S pickup.

Personally, if it was ME, I'd go with the suburban. The reason is that it's much easier to get performance parts for the suburban than it is for the expedition. It's not going to be DIFFICULT for either, but I have seen SO much stuff out there for the GM vehicles. I was about 5 seconds away from buying an Avalanche when I bought my Sport Trac. The dealership that had the avalanche missed me by no more than 5 seconds (after I had left to go get the sport trac). All in all, I'm pretty happy with the decision I made though, especially now that I've got the supercharger. The Avalanche never could have gotten this good of mileage.

Anyway, my vote is for the Suburban. :)

My dad has a Suburban to tow his 23 ft camping trailer. He says it does well in the mountains of Tennessee on his trips from KY to FL. The interior looks a little more modern than the boxy and dated exterior.

My fiancee's daughter had an Expedition, and the thing I liked about it is that the dashboard controls were all the same as my ST. I really hate searching for controls in an unfamiliar car (the fiancee's Volvo S-80 drives me nuts!). It was a solid vehicle and with the exception that parking was a very easy vehicle to drive, though it seemed sluggish to me even with the V-8 engine.
