I have a 2002 4x2 4.10 LS rear end with 70000 miles that is making a noise like a power steering pump going bad. The noise varies with the speed I'm driving and there are no vibrations or slipping. With the rear window down the noise is very loud but with the window up it can't be heard. Is this a known defect in these vehicles? Will the dealer do anything to help cover the cost if it is? Thanks

No defects.

How is the fluid level ??? IF it is low it is a maintenance issue...

Some one on here just had the rearend rebuilt due to low fluid...

Does the whine stay constant, or does it quiet when you let off the gas?

If the latter, most likely the pinion bearing. I know from recent expirence on my 02 4x4.
