Like it says....

Sometime if I re-boot I get it back but not for long. It just goes away when ever and will not return.

Went to the Windows Update page and updated to Version 9 or 10 what ever is the newest. Still not sound.

I can go to another page that has music or something and it that specif page works fine. So it has to do with the Windows Media Player.

Any help would be appreciated....

Could be the drivers for your sound card glitching...

I would un install the sound card and re install...

I had a similar issue and that fixed it, I could listen to cd's and stuff, but the player and web pages did not work..

Good point Todd.

Don't recall how to determine what I have off hand but I'll get into the system control manager and more than likely find it.

Then go from there.

Thanks..

Windows media player is simply a shell of a program that links DirectX filter graphs and codecs in order to play video and audio streams. Since SOME sounds work even wile others do not (you say some web pages with music still work), it could be an issue with a particular audio codec....but which one?

You might try the following:

1. Next time you have this problem playing a music or a video file with audio, and while in Media Player and with the file loaded click: File->Properties.

2. The File tab of the Properties window will display the Audio and Video codec (if applicable) needed to playback the file. Take note of the audio codec name.

3. To figure out which version of said Audio codec you are running by:

a. Open Device Manager (Start > Run > devmgmt.msc > Enter)

b. Expand "Sound, video, and game controllers"

c. Double-click either Audio Codecs or Video Codecs

d. Go to the Properties tab

e. Select the Audio codec and press Properties or doubleclick the codec

f. Click the "About" button to get version information

4. Do a google search the EXACT audio codec name and see if you can find a website that

has newer versions for download and install, and if it does, give them a try

OR

simply remove the codec and allow it to be automatically reinstalled from Microsoft's website when the media plays. That might get you a later version and/or fix your problem.

The newer version of the codec "might" solve your problem.

Hope this helps

Well, everything inside my computer seems to be fine. All the drivers are updated as best I can tell.

Seems to be windows media only that I have the issue with...

Go into add and remove programs, Remove any media players, and any updates for it,, re boot, then re download the new player....

I can not delete the Media Player. I am using version 10. I have tried to download version 9 and it will net let me due to XP and the fact I have the newer version. I can delete some but not all of the upgrades via the ADD AND REMOVE link in the control panel.

It is a Windows Media issue as nothing produces sound via that player but all my other media players work fine. (CD's, DVD's, the internet).

I have gone into the files, found the files, right click and delete... Some will. Some say you can not do that, and yet others disappear like you delete them only to appear before you eyes seconds later, (Auto install????).

So how can I remove it from my computer????

I have to admit that it is not a bad thing to do anyways. I am sure I have a a TON of misc junk on my laptop.

But I am not looking forward to it when I do finally do it.. LOL
