I was given a copy of Windows Vista, it is genuine. I have been using XP and am very comfortable with it. is Vista a vast improvement on XP? I would like some opinions from those that have upgraded.

Y'all have a good one

Bob

I used it for about 4 months, 2 weeks ago I went back to XP. I tried and tried, but lack of good drivers and the fact that my system runs much much faster with XP I finally gave up. I have never had any problems with security/viruses in XP so the "extra" security was only a hiderance for me. At least it came free with my PC so I didn't waste any money buying it.

Also I could not get some games ( and some other software) to work properly

If you're not having problems now, stay with XP (if it aint broke then don't fix it :D )

As David said unless you have some desire to run it I wouldn't. It's nothing special in my eyes, I have 3 machines with Vista and 2 with XP only because of preloaded vista or driver issues (vista has built in raid support for one of my motherboards and I don't have a floppy to load the drivers while installing xp)

If you are going to buy a new system ,buy one with Vista pre-installed, that way all the hardware will be compatible with Vista. If you go to Microsofts web site they have a program to test your system and drivers to see if they are compatible with Vista.

I was reading a tech site that said, there is becoming a more increasing demand, for new machines with, XP. Some of the munufactors are gearing up to provide them..

I'd say that, unless you're upgrading your PC or recently bought a new one, stick with XP for the time being. Drivers are an issue, and it's a resource hog. It's darned pretty and has some slick features, but it's nothing you can't live without for a little while longer.

I've been using it for a few months now and I like it. But it took a little while for video card manufacturers to catch up with their drivers and they're still not done.

I wouldn't upgrade an older pc to Vista. Only buy a new pc with it already installed on it simply because of hardware compatibility issues, etc.

I have two new Gateway laptops with Vista and they run perfect with no issues. I also have two desktops with XP that run perfect with no issues. However, I would never consider upgrading either of those desktops to Vista simply because they are a couple of years old and Vista is so picky about hardware.

I have a new Toshiba with 2 gig of Ram. Vista works perfectly on it. There is a few things that you will need to get used to simply because it is different from XP. But over-all, I like Vista as it is laid out a bit better than XP.

I like how it layers the various windows you have open and what not. It makes it very easy to choose what window you want on top and what not. It is a very cosmetic program, so if you have a preference to cosmetics and appearance then Vista is the way to go.

That said, if you have XP and it is working fine for you, I probably would not suggest changing to Vista.

I like the Look of Vista, but I will wait until their first Service Pack is released and buy a new pc with it preinstalled. There are some nice new improvements in Vista, but nothing that makes it compelling to upgrade, there is nothing I could do with Vista that I cannot do with XP that would give me a reason to upgrade. Additionally, I know XP very well and can fix any problems with it that occur. Finally, it is a nice summer and I have no desire to sit inside beta testing/troubleshooting a new operating system.

That being said, I get the impression you want to try vista out a bit, why not set up a duel boot on your machine so you can choose XP or Vista? that way you keep your current system and can try out Vista on the same system.

Vista SP1 is due out in December (just in time for Christmas... imagine that). I wouldn't even consider a switch until then. Even then.... I dunno if I would bother.

Windows 7 is supposed to come out in 2010 I believe. They are trying to get into a more predictable release schedule (about 3 years from what I've read)...

My son-in-law is a programmer for HP.....he purchased a new

HP w/Vista.....returned it and had one built w/XP......'nuff said.;)

Keep XP, download a program called "windows blinds" You can choose from thousands of different interfaces, many of which are Vista look alikes. Thus getting the visual bonuses without the hassles of the new OS.

I have been dealing with Vista since it was beta. Do not upgrade (or break grin) your computer. If you are comfortable with XP stay there. Vista has and will have several problems, both in user response (the logging in every time it thinks there is a security violation) and in driver selection. Most manufacturers take 6 to 8 months to finally get the drivers right. Hence a lot of the problems people are facing. Stay with XP at least until MS gets the security holes fixed. The three biggest Trojan/worms that caused over 100,000 computers to crash can still infect Vista!. With MS being part of the CERN board and other security forums, I do not know why they didn't fix those ports.

Thanks everybody!!. I will stay with XP, when I build my next computer, I will keep the XP. I will upgrade to Vista next year sometime after I know all the glitches have been fixed.

have a good one

Too many things still don't work, or don't work seamlessly with Vista, including

- old apps

- old printers

- home networking, especially wireless

And, to get the same speed as XP running on the same machine you have to upgrade with an additional 512MB to 1GB of memory (I said ADDITIONAL, not TOTAL).

Nope, it's not worth it, IMHO, for most people.
