All Over the East Coast,
I'll throw this out here before I take the Trac in for service. When moving at slow speeds (and likely at high, but I cannot hear it), I get a "wuhp wuhp" noise. When I apply the brakes, it goes away. I had the brakes checked last week, and the fronts and backs are fine. It's not the tires, which nevertheless are cupping--I haven't had the time to get them replaced, yet. Any other ideas I can take with me to the dealer?

Welcome to the cupped tires club. My truck started at around 12K miles, and has been whup--whupping ever since (now has about 30K).

It's that good Ford engineering combined with crap OEM Goodyear tires. I tried to get my tires replaced under warranty but my dealer said it's "normal wear".

It doesn't go away when braking, it changes with weight transfer.

Bump your tire pressure way up and you will also notice a change.

Ahh. I should have known that. I checked and added air this past weekend so all are at 35 PSI. I guess I just need to hurry up and dump these tires--a good thing.

GuruGary, can you rotate them opposite sides? I thought you had to do fronts to backs, backs to fronts, but keep a given tire on the same side of the truck throughout its life.

I vote for tire cupping also....mine does the same, sound changes with braking...

Iam going to wear them to 50%, then change them....

Explains it better than I can. Yes, you can rotate to opposite sides.

Thanks for the info! Mine is doing this too, but I didnt know how to explain it. Nice one Adam!

Well im kinda choked, cause I have 1000$ worth of rubber on there and its not even been a full year. I had an alignment, etc...

I thought it was my brakes too, so I just did almost $1000 worth of brake work for nothing. Once I had the pads off I seen they still had about 50%... I thought it was warped rotors, so I changed those, the bearings, and the pads. My rotors were pretty close to being expired anyways, but still, I coulda waited till the summer instead of doing it my freezing cold garage.

My tires are directional, so I have to move the front to the back and vice vera, will this help?

Yes, XST, the moving fronts to back will help because the cupping seems to only happen on the front and it is louder on the front. When you move them to the back the noise will go down substantially, just by being back further. Then, they will wear a little more evenly while back there...but next rotation after that, WHUP, WHUP, WHUP!

Funny, I have two years on my BFG tires. I got a proper alignment and I have no cupping tires.

Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires are not good tires. I would not take them for free.

I have yet to find OEM tires that were worth a hoot.

My last three vehicles had OEM tires that were garbage and Theresa's Pontiac came with some tires that wore out after only 20,000 miles and never had any traction and were noisy as hell.

Ironically, all 4 vehicles had one thing in common. The 1989 Escort GT had Eagle GT tires. The 1992 Escort GT had Eagle GT+4. The 1998 Grand Am GT had Eagle GSA (or were they RA...thought it doesn't matter). The Sport Trac had Wrangler RT/S.

I will never go out and buy a set of Goodyear tires and after Goodyear purchased Dunlop, I no longer buy those tires either.

If I walk out of my front door and look south, I can see the Goodyear World Headquarters. I would LOVE to support Goodyear, but I prefer not to throw my money out of the window.

My '04 Trac with the 3.73 dif came with Michelin Cross Terrains. 55k on them now and still lots of life left in them. No cupping, no uneven wear; rotated twice since new. Just because the Goodyear tires don't seem to be worth a hoot, doesn't mean that ALL OEM tires aren't worth a hoot.

My '03 came with the same Michelin tires. Finally replaced them at 104,000 or so. They passed inspection at 97,000.
