Hi all! I'm picking up my Black 2010 Sport Trac XLT 4.0 later today, it's got a measly 93k on the clock!

I'm part of the FB group, too, and already have a quote on an aluminum thermostat housing to get replaced. While I'm there, I think I'll replace the timing chain tensioners since the thermostat housing will be completely removed and they'll be easy to get at.

Questions ----

- Does anyone have the OEM P/N's for the tensioners themselves?
- There's (2) in total, one up top by thermostat, one in the rear that I can access from passenger inner tire?
- do these need to be "primed" before installation? I did some coilover installs and always pushed the coil down repeatedly a few times until the pressure was consistent, prior to install.
- What else needs to be done prior to install on tensioners? Do they need to be filled with anything, or just priming?

Any thoughts/tips welcome, I'm looking forward to this ownership and will post pictures when I get the truck!

Welcome to the herd! Good that you're dealing ASAP with the known trouble items.
Had better luck by priming Tensioners with fresh oil then using a vice to press the oil out;
otherwise they're difficult to getting threads lined up & started
Yes , remove FrontRight wheel & lower rubber mud skirt then drill a hole thru upper plastic mud skirt
to get access to the RearRight Tensioner

Question, is the 2010 4.0 the same as the 2006 4.0 in the Explorer XLT? I ask, b/c my girlfriend's 4.0 is the BANE of my mechanic's existense. I know why, b/c they're rough to work on (if you don't work with the cams and timing chains that are on the front and back of them). But I'm asking, b/c my buddy, that has done alot of work for me, just really doesn't want to work on the 4.0 in my GF's '06 XLT, 4X4, 4.0. Is that the same motor you're talking about? If so, I probably need to find another mechanic. And I've liked him in the past, but I didn't like that he charged me $800 to swap the plugs and coil-packs on my '08 V8. Yes, I know, they're a pain, and can break, and they didn't break any. But I'm really, REALLY, tired of people taking advantage.

For years 1997~2011, the Ford V6~4.0L~SOHC engine block is the same.
Various items external to the block evolved\changed thru those years: Manifold, Radiator, ThermoStatHousing...
The JackShaft LeafSpring TimingTensioner & above two CamShaft OilPressurized TimingTensioners
were redesigned\revised\improved around 2001, but a Tensioner that fits a 2011 SOHC block will fit a 1997 SOHC block.
Experienced mechanics understandably don't like this engine & its bastardized RightRear\LeftFront CamShaft TimingChains; this flaw was likely the 'last nail in the coffin" for Ford\Cologne V6 designs dating to the 1960s.

I actually have 2 oem gen 2 4.0 tensioners i got last year and never installed... Id probably sell them...

Todd I wish I had seen this... BAH. I've got the tensioners in hand, I think you're aware of the potential tranny issue I'm trying to work out, too. Trying to get that confirmed/fixed if needed before I tackle this tensioner and thermostat housing job. Gotta love it!

@DILLARD000 Thank you SO much for all this info. Exactly what I needed and was really hoping to get from this Forum. I have an Audi TT that's my fun car and I'm part of a GREAT forum there that's been super helpful during my ownership, really, really REALLY happy from the responses and aid in this forum already.

You guys rock!
