What should I do regarding a high mileage engine/transmission?

I'm looking for the wisdom of others. 2004 ST 4x2, has 250k miles on it, including original timing chain cassettes. Currently showing no problems, except weeping oil out of the top valve covers, and at least the lower oil ban gasket and potentially the upper oil ban gasket (I can't tell if...

Front Timing Chain Hydraulic Tensioner Disaster Averted

Hey, no problem. Thanks for letting me know. It might have to do with this being a rural Georgia truck. We drive a lot of highway and interstate miles as opposed to stop and go city driving. I'm not exaggerating when I say probably 80% of the miles are "highway miles".

How many miles on your ST?

Change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles consistently and the 4.0 can last a long, long time. I'm over 250k miles on my '04 4x2 on the original chains, guides, and tensioners. While I have no symptoms of the infamous guide and tensioner problems that a lot of Ford designed engines seem to...

Front Timing Chain Hydraulic Tensioner Disaster Averted

I agree. My dilemma is that my 4.0 has no sign of failure right now. But it has a lot of miles on the unit. Should I just play the card I'm dealt and wait for failure and then get a total rebuilt unit. Or should I go to the effort and just replace the cassettes as a preventative. The...

    Timing chain replacement

This is the BEST 4 part series on replacing these timing chains I've ever seen. Well worth the watch even if you have no interest in doing this yourself. This is part 1 but you can watch the whole series. Removing the transmission sounds like extra work. But different strokes for...

Front Timing Chain Hydraulic Tensioner Disaster Averted

Hands down, the absolute best YouTube 4 part series on replacing the timing cassettes on the Ford 4.0. I currently have around 250k on the stock chains, guides, and tensioners. The engine runs well. I'm debating on pulling the engine and doing this. pt 1 pt 2 pt 3 pt 4

    Timing chain

This is a very old thread. But its something I'm considering doing on my '04 as preventative maintenance. My truck currently sits around 250k miles. I've no issues or symptoms which would indicate a timing chain issue. But I've never serviced it. The chain, guides, and tensioners are all...

Can people list the YEAR of thier ST and Problems they've had please?

I can't speak to the 4x4's, I've heard people complain about problems with them. But the 1st gen ST 2x4 is simple, solid and easy to maintain. I've no doubt that mine has many more trouble-free miles left on it. The interior still looks good for its age. There is a little fading of the tan...

    It's only worth $3200, really?

There really is a point, where you probably need to just keep it I guess. Do buyers consider the condition of the vehicle or are CarFax's price really the top dollar. $3200 It does have high mileage I suppose. But I've changed the oil regularly, it has basically a new suspension on it, all...

Can people list the YEAR of thier ST and Problems they've had please?

2004 4x2 currently with around 250k miles. I've had no real mechanical issues with the truck. I have replaced some wear items. 1. Brake pads and rotors. 2. Ball joints, upper and lower control arm bushings, outer tie rods. sway bar bushings and links, and shocks. 3. rear differential speed...

    New to site

I get the impression there's mostly tumbleweeds here now, but searching the website is a good resource, and if your patient or not in a rush for information someone will come along and offer some advice. Case in point, I think we're the two newest members to this forum, and I'm welcoming you. :)

How many miles on your ST?

I agree. I rather prefer the older more analog cars and trucks. Today, everyone is making disposable cars and trucks. There are more plastic components that get old and brittle. Designed to go together, but not be taken apart and repaired. New car and trucks infotainment screens and techno...

    Lower control arm bushings

I'm answering this for posterity. I'm looking at a new front control arm right now. The bushings are installed and they look and measure exactly the same. FYI: Mine is RWD.

A twist: GM and Ford Merger looking increasingly more viable (Link)

Oh, I agree. As I said the only two American car companies that haven't gone bankrupt are Ford and Tesla. But even both of them took government money. Tesla repaid its government loans early. I'm not sure about Ford.

A twist: GM and Ford Merger looking increasingly more viable (Link)

I'm afraid you are mistaken. Ford did borrow money from the Federal government. "Ford Motor owes the government $5.9 billion it borrowed in June 2009, the same month GM filed for bankruptcy. By Sept. 15, Ford needs to start paying that money back. In a government filing, the carmaker said $577...

Forgot to check in. I guess I broke the rules by posting elsewhere first.

HI! I have a 2004 ST that I've owned since new. It has been used by one son and is now back with me. We've had good luck with this truck. Other than normal wear issues it's been pretty trouble-free over the last 250k miles. I'm not one to defer maintenance issues and a bit of a fanatic...

A twist: GM and Ford Merger looking increasingly more viable (Link)

Building passenger cars and trucks are the restaurant businesses of manufacturing. It's tough to make money at it. Margins are narrow in the best of times. Overhead cost is insane and consumers are fickled. Complying with government regulations cost a fortune, which is why all cars and SUVs...

    Used Cars To Avoid

All I can report is that our 2004 has had zero major problems since new. It currently has over 250k on the clock. But we don't defer maintenance. I think once a car sells "cheap" it goes into "weak" hands. People who can only afford the price to buy the car, but likely to defer maintenance...
