I've been contemplating upgrading the door speakers in my 05 xlt. The currents speakers are the oem 5x7 2-way components. I have the 6 disc changer with mp3 capability and 8" sub in the storage compartment behind the rear driver side seat.

I like clean sound and clarity as I listen to a lot of live concerts (soundboard and audience recordings). My question is, will there be decent improvement by swapping the oem's with some nice aftermarket 2-way or 3-way 5x7, 6x8, 6x9, or 5.5" - 6.5" components?

The system sounds decent as is, I just want a touch more high's and clarity. Is this gonna be an improvement?

I do have a 2-channel bridgeable Kicker IX252 amp and 2-channel bridgeable MTX Thunder 280 amp from my previous setup. I would rather do a simple swap of the oem speakers with the aftermarket speakers and leave it at that (no mods if possible). If I can't live with the change I might be willing to bypass the stock amp and wire in one of the previous amps I listed for the door speakers and leave the sub on the stock amp.

Any thoughts on this idea? I know it would be best to replace the HU also, but, it's not going to be in the budget for that anytime this year.

I have Kicker "true" 6x8 3-ways in mine with the stock HU and the sound quality is great. (direct bolt in that way) That is without an amp to them. I'm sure with the HU you have it would sound pretty good.;)

Theres always something better about making the upgrade.

I'm about to upgrade my OEM Adrenalin Pioneer 5x7's to Alpine Type -R 5x7s, but I'm planning to run a PPI PCX amp to them as well.

Thanks for the input! This may not be the most optimal way to go at the moment, but, I guess it's a start. I can add later.:D

Now I just need to figure out what the hell to do with my 12" Punch with plexi cube enclosure. Too bad there's not a box to fit under the rear seat that size.:(

What is your wiring schematic going to look like with the PPI PCX amp? Harnesses, etc.?

Is this the specific inline converter I would use to bypass the stock amp and wire my aftermarket amp to the new speakers while keeping the oem HU?

Well my system in the 04 came with the 8" sub, door speakers and an amp powered to all of them. I already have an after-market HU. Next is just to rip out all the stock crap, install 4x Alpine Type -R 5x7's Powered By PPI PCX440 amp, and also install 4x Alpine Type -S 10" subs Powered by PPI PCX2400 amp.

I currently have some weird wiring going from the brain of my Alpine IVA-310 to the stock Adrenalin amp. But it needs to go. I'll figure all my crap out when the speakers all get here.

DMac, they are actually a "true" 6x8. The speakers that are listed as "5x7/6x8" will mount using the factory holes. A 5x7 speaker will fit, but will need a hole or two drilled. I know I had mine listed as "true 5x7" but actually they are "true 6x8". They were a direct fit for the OEM's.;)

Any thoughts on these?

I'm thinking of going all the way around and replacing the four door speakers at once.

Those should do. Pioneer makes pretty good speakers for the price. Replaceing the 4 doors at once is the best way to do it. Just be careful of the tabs on the front door trims by the rear view mirrors. You have to take the trim straight up, not out away from the door. You will break the tabs if you don't pull straight up.;)
