Picked up a K&N HP2010 oil filter for almost $15 dollars (Pep Boys) and a 1qt of Mobil1 Synthetic for almost $9 (I had 4 from previous purchases)! Changing my oil and filter today, I briefly wondered why I don't just spend $30 or so at a shop instead of DIY but spending $55 on oil and filter. I suppose I'm also saving by just doing filter change and top-off every 5K miles, and complete oil/filter change every 10K. At least I know superior products are being used, and the job being done right. But wow, have prices gone up!

That's at least three Motorcraft FL-820S. A lot to pay for that end nut! JK

I change my own oil, too, for the same reason. But I don't pay anywhere near that much for oil or filters.

I buy the Quaker State synthetic oil when Menard's puts it on sale for about $3 a quart.

I get whatever common brand filter is on sale. My Job 1 motor has such a gigantic oil filter, as big as a mayonnaise jar, it's got to contain so much filter media that it couldn't possibly matter which brand filter I use.

I agree that the prices sound high to me.

I pay about $8.80 per quart of Mobil-1 for my Mercedes (at the dealer), but it requires 9 quarts. It also requires a Mann oil filter which also runs $15 online and $25 at the dealer. In the end a typical oil change cost me aobut $250 with all the other services they do like replacing the 2 engine air filters and the cabin filter. The good part is that I only need to change the oil once a year or every 13K miles. That's only slightly higher than I paid for my Sport Trac each year.

I catch sales. The last 2 were @ Advance.

5qts of castrol full syn and a K&N filter. $27...

Blackstone lab report came back good @ 10K miles.

Lab tech said, I dont need to do a filter and 1qt top off at 5K.

So I will go 10K on this last change. No 5k filter change.

Then I will send them another sample.

Here is a qoute from the tech.

If you want to run 10K miles on a single filter, and that should be fine. We use the insolubles test to determine how the oil filter is doing, and your insolubles were fine at 0.3%.

Wally-Mart has Mobil 1 for about $6.50 a quart or $27 for a 5 quart jug. I get Mobil 1 filters at Auto Zone for about $12. Have been told that Mobil 1 and K&N oil filters are the same thing on the inside. Auto Zone is also about $15 for K&N's. Had been using Motorcraft filters and Mobil 1 0w-30 from Wally-Mart when I was doing 5000 mile oil changes but since I stepped it up to 7500 I am using Mobil 1 filters and Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30. UOA's on the Mobil 1 were fine for 5000 mile oil changes but a little high on the iron ppm when I stretched it to 6500.

FWIW, in every one of my family's vehicles where I got UOA's comparing different oils, Pennzoil Platinum gave better results than Mobil 1 (and it's cheaper). Just an FYI.

Thanks for the replies. I need to send a sample out to Blackstone on my next 10K oil/filter change and see how my selection of brand/parts is holding up with my truck.

I have 90K mi. on my '04 XLT flex fuel and I have always gone 5K mi. and then used Mobil 1 5W30wt fully synth and Motorcraft FL-820S filter. At least this way I can't blame myself later for going cheap on oil/filter changes if something happens; I know it's probably overkill.

The AMSOIL EaO oil filter is warranted for 1 year or 25,000 miles, whichever first. Use that with our Signature Series 5W-30 and you've got a one year oil change.

I've posted more information in the Project section, Maintenance. Cost of an EaO11 is $17.30 retail, or $13.15 if you're a Preferred Customer. Please contact me for more information.

I pay $19.95 for a Motorcraft filter and five quarts of Motorcraft synth blend oil. And get this.... the dealer removes the old stuff and installs the new stuff for the same price while I wait. That's the price I've paid since 1995. I haven't changed my own oil since.

I hope you got kissed before you got________...

My last oil change was a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 and a Bosch filter for 27.99. This week they have the new Castrol Syntech and a filter forget the brand for 29.99.
