A buddy of mine had one, bought it brand new. About 2000 miles later, the steering rack started to creek and make noise, so he brought it back and they replaced the rack. A few months down the road, same thing, except this time they couldnt get rid of the creeking. After 3 months of crap with chevy and no fix he turned it back in on lemon law and bought a Tahoe, lol

Ed they are notorious for a/c problems especially the compressor. Valve cover gaskets like to leak. Other then that they are ok. Parts are cheap atleast.

I had the same problem with the steering rack in a 2000 Impala, and I think they shared several common elements with the MC. I had LOTS of problems with that Impala.

I had a 2000 Impala production date Oct of 1999, (same underpins, engine, components as Monte Carlo) and had the same steering rack issue as noted by fmarano and TJR. My Impala also needed to spend a couple of days at the dealer because they needed to add a Cradle/bracket to the engine compartment because the whole engine would move around inside the compartment during stopping or turning. At first they said engine mounts but then said they needed to add the bracket. They eventually said that the stearing rack problem was caused because of the engine moving, they had a recall done for this for Impalas that didn't have such cradle/bracket. The bracket fixed the engine problem moving. A few months went by and then started getting the same steering rack issue. Got rid of it ASAP before the warranty went out on it.

Worst car I ever had was that Impala, I traded it in after 3 years and 50K miles, NEVER to buy GM again. Bad tranny, bad steering, ac/delco parts that break in your hands...TOTAL CRAP!

good point Darin, missed that ...the 99 MC is actually a Lumina, It's the 2000 MC's that are pretty much 2 door Impalas. My confusion was based on my ex- Impala being produced in Oct of 1999. Though by fmarano's prior statement it seems his buddy had a 99 MC with the same issues TJR and I had with our 2000 Impalas. May be some of the 2000 Impalas used "carry over " parts from the 99 MC/Lumina that gave way to the steering rack problems as fmarano's MC buddy appears to have had.
