Ultimatly, the main part of the check-up is handing the dealer a large chunk of your hard earned money.

The choice is yours. My Trac has not been to the dealer for any type of check-up.

i took my ST to the dealership to have the transmission checked out. cause the OD light came on. i took it on Dec 28 late in the afternoon. and they had it till that thurs. they said that some gasket or seal had a tear in it. and someone tryed to fix it with silicone, but that didnt last and that caused my OD lite to come on. so they fixed it, and the bill came to 691.00. and i went to pic it up on thurs afternoon, and i only had the trac for only 45 mins and the darn OD lite came back on, so i called them and took it back, and they gave me a rental car at there expense. cause the work that was done on it was warranty for 12months or 12,000 miles. so the repaired it again and had to redo some computer number in it. thats why the OD lite came on. and after all that its running good so far. Knock on wood. so im going to save up some money and have it ready to buy another transmission for it. so when it goes i have it here . and all i have to do is take it to a transmission shop and have them put it in. im not going to take it to the dealership and have it done. the price they charged me for the work i had done was alot. 171.00 dollars for part. and 520.00 dollars for the labor. but i wanted it done right. so i figured who else could do it the right way and get it done, so i took it to ford. i figured its a ford vehicle they should know what to do to fix.

so thats why i took it there my husband called me crazy but its my truck so he just let me do it. oh well its fix. oh well i just wanted to share this little bit of information. good luck

60k maintenance, off the top of my head....rotate tires, oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter, tranny flush (every 30k), and change the transfer case lube. Coolant should be flushed at 45k and every 30k after, so do that if you haven't done it yet.

With the ESP you don't have to get it done at the dealer as long as you have receipts from someplace showing it was done. You could easily do it all yourself except the tranny flush but I'm not sure how that plays if there is a warranty issue.

If you want to be really anal, change the spark plugs and axles' lube at 60k also, but that's not required.

We just had our 60K service done at our dealership. We feel safer letting Ford do it as long as we have our extended warranty. We don't want to take any chances with them saying that someone else screwed something up. It cost us about $260, and we provided the oil and the rear-end oil. We wanted everything synthetic and the only synthetic they would provide was the tranny fluid.

To the list that JohnnyO provided they also checked the brakes, clutch and U-joints.

Around here "good independent mechanic" is an oxy-moron. Or at least all of the mechanics are mornos... We tried several and never found one that I would trust to fill my gas tank.

We are very lucky with our dealer. Our service writer is really good at what he does and takes very good care of us. It helps that he really loves my truck. This trip we had the 60k service done, and they replaced the rear axel and only had my truck for the day. Dropped it off at 7:30, picked it up at 5:00. They even washed it for me.
