The cables are usually refered to as Cat-5 Network Cables. They look just like a modular telephone plug on the end but it is slightly larger and has more wires.
For the most part you won't notice much the speed difference when going wireless, but if you do a lot of moving large files from you PC to laptop, or laptop to PC, then you will want to use the hardwired connection which is usually much faster.
