OK, I would like to try to replace the head unit in my 05 Adrenalin. I am happy with the sound quality, but I am craving the ability to easily hook up, control and charge my Zune player, and have additional ability for other aux inputs. I am trying to see if I can keep the stock sub. It been many years since I did any after market stereos, and I have not used amps before. After examining the wiring for the stock radio, and looking at the specs for after market head units, it appears to me that I could use the sub outs from the new deck to feed the inputs to the stock amp. I see that there are various volts available in the after market decks sub outs (2.0, 2.5, 4.0 etc). Does any body know what the adrenalin sub would require, or if it is critical? Also there are two outputs from the factory deck to the sub that I am not familiar with, and I cannot find in any aftermarket deck. They are labeled "subwofer clip detect / amplifier enable/main clip detect". Does any body know what function these perform and if they are required for the sub to work. I am looking at several different head units with USB input that should work with the Zune (or my daughters Ipod), my favorite so far is the Pioneer DEH-600UB. Any input from you audio guru's would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can always mess with the gain in the new head unit to change the signal that the amp is receiving, so essentially, no, the voltage doesn't really matter. As far as the wires are concerned, do you have any pictures? That might help us help you

Gain controls on an amplifier are basically just small potentiometers (variable resistors) or volume controls if you will, that allow you to adjust the incoming signal to the amplifier so the amplifier works well with your headunit of choice or to match the level of other amplifiers in your system.

Greg,

I was bored so I thought I would check out these forums, I haven't been on here forever, but I stumbled across your post. I put an aftermarket head unit in my 2005 Adrenalin, and kept the factory sub, amp, and all speakers fully functional.

You need to get hold of a head unit that you can turn off the internal amp for or one that does not have an internal amp. I put in a Kenwood DPX-701, which I love (I just have a 16GB usb flash drive plugged into the USB port and it does the rest, but it also has an aux input for your Zune. I highly recommend this series, it fills the dash well because it is a double DIN. Search the forums for installing a double DIN if necessary). I turned off the internal amplifier, and the only fairly complicated thing I did was soldered RCA connectors onto the factory harness for front and rear left and right, as well as the sub connectors, then plugged them into the Kenwood's pre-out connectors. I can't recall how I identified these wires to do such things, but that is most certainly what I did.

Check out my images for a picture of the unit (its not actually in my dash but that is what it looks like).

I hope this helps.
