I was at a local shop a while back and they didn't reccomend an aftermarket sub. Claimed many people came back to get a stock one put back in because the new one sounded so poor? I would think it should work, but what do I know? Maybe Steve from Hawaii will give us his opinion. BC :eek:nline:

Bob C.- Thanks. I am pretty clueless regarding car-fi. My primary biz is Home A/V.

Many here know their car audio very well. (JD Boxes, etc.) Hopefully they will chime in, soon.

Don't understand why an aftermarket sub would not work with the Pioneer system, possibly an impedance issue.

I don't really know what the gen2 sub setup is like.. but a lot of factory systems use weird impedance subs (3 or 6 ohm) which you can get around.. on top of that they are made for the tiny enclosures that the OEM builds. After-market subs generally are 2 or 4 ohms (other exist I said generally)

So with all that said, if you can find out the impedance of the factory setup, and measure the factory box size you might be able to find a suitable direct replacement, but it's unlikely to sound much better or be any louder.

If you want to replace the sub and the enclosure, then you have some more options, but I doubt the factory amp puts out much power so I doubt it would be a huge improvement there also...

I was wondering about the oem sub behind the seat myself. From the paper side it looks cheap. I dont see how it can flex much. Mine has no roll edge. I flip the seat down so I can get more thump. the seat up muffles it.

I have a speaker that came from a boston subwoofer. It is the same diameter. well made paper, roll edge and cone. About a 16oz magnet and a 4ohm coil and 3" depth. I might try it in the factory enclosure some day.

Otherwise Im not into setting up new amps and wiring.Im fairly happy with the oem 6 disc pioneer. Could have better speakers though.
