Well i have been working on the rear end all day. I'm finally getting to change the rear axle shaft. Took everything apart, cleaned and painted the axle case cover, pulled out the old shaft, and then the fun. Those axle bearings are really pressed in arent they? They still look good but while I have it all apart I might as well put in a new seal and bearings. Local shops don't have a bearing puller, I found out by going to 3 different places allover town on bike this morning (my legs are just throbbing, lol) and no luck. Anyone have any ideas?

When I had my axles removed, I replaced the seal, but not the bearings.

Why are you wanting to replace the bearings? I replaced the seal since it is cheap and easy to replace, but never even considered replacing the bearings.

You might want to dump those crappy drum brakes for some of these... You are already half way there.

lol, I'd love to but the new wheels set me back. :p

I have a bad vibration on the drivers rear side. It's the axle shaft, I imagine being bent for so long (it was bent when we first got it about 2.5 years ago) had to have also affected the bearings somehow so better safe than sorry.

Honestly, Brandon.

Contact a junk yard and see if you can locate a backing plate/daliper mount for the Explorer. You will be glad you did.

Alright Tom, fork over details. :D

Year model etc. What will I need exactly. Shoes, pads, rotor, cables, w/e. Gimme the numbers pleeease.

I think those shoes you see are his e-brake shoes. You can see the mount holes for a caliper that just isn't installed yet.

Looks to me like a disc brake without the caliper..those are the emergency brake shoes.....I believe!!

I'm slow..you beat me to it!!!

Darin, how about this pick? Same picture, only with the caliper and "drum" as you call it.

Brandon64, the Motorsport kit is based off the 1996 Explorer. So, if you can get the backing plate/caliper mount for a 1996 to 2001 Explorer, 2001 to 2003 Explorer Sport, or 2003 to 2005 Trac, you would be set. You would also need some odds and ends like banjo bolts, copper washers, brake hoses, brake lines, pads, etc. Nothing too major.

wow, didn't know there was a e-brake shoe that works like a drum behind the disc caliper. That figures since I've never changed disc brake pads on a car with 4 wheel discs.

Darin,

It depends on the design. My Escort and Dad's Taurus have the parking brake actuated by a lever on the rear caliper. Other vehicles like the Explorer use a drum in the hat of the rotor for the parking brake. On our motorhome, the parking brake is a large drum on the output shaft of the tranny. That parking brake is not even at the wheels.

Whew! Well guys I finally finished and now I gtg to meet up with the boys. Had to find a puller, damn $130. But then it was easy. Oh man it is so nice to have a nice smooth ride. Feels like new again. :D
