Airbox mod

Has anyone done a airbox mod on their ST? If so, how did you do it? and do you have any pics? Befor I look into getting a new intake i was thinking about doing this to se how it would do.

Remove the snorkle and this will double the air intake opening.

I cut the silencer out of mine and it helped over the stock opening.

I removed the silencer horn and used a 2 1/2" hole saw in the bottom of the box...added a K&N drop in....it did help throtle response...eventualy I will try a MAC...

Removing the silencer does that do any thing with the water being pulled in?

No Jay, it doesn't affect that.

This is what I did to mine before eventually swapping out to a K&N type intake.



Removed the silencer, then made a tunnel for cool clean air to get directly into the airbox instead of warm air from the engine compartment.

Thanks for the info everyone and for the pics. How do I get the airbox out of my 04 ST? I would like to have some idea how to get it out before I start pulling and cutting. Could someone please tell me how to get it out please.

It is held in by nothing more that rubber grommets. It is held in pretty well though....



Remove the cover and filter and you will see where some tabs go through the grommets. Spray the areas with the tabs with some lubricant and start to wiggle the Air Box around so the lubricant will get onto the tabs and grommets. Then you basically pull hard and it will slip on out...

I will try it my next day off work. Just got done working 10 12hour days straight and I have not had anytime to do anything with my ST or my Explorer. I am looking for a CD player for my the Explorer it is an 02 xls.

It is held in by nothing more that rubber grommets. It is held in pretty well though....

I couldn't get mine out. Pulling hard didn't work and a crowbar only succeeded in bending the inner lip of the front fender.

I found it easier to get a screwdriver below the box and pry it up. Once you get the bottom free the two side ones will pull straight out.

That is why I suggest lubing the retaining points. It helps tremendously.

I believe that removing the right headlight provides access for snorkel removal.
