Is there anything that can make the reception better? I have a kenwood head unit and the static is terrible especially going under overpasses, etc.

AM radio reception hasn't improved from day one. A transistor radio works better than ANY car receiver, IMO.

Hopefully satellite radio will change that, and render AM/FM obsolete, in the near future.

I always wondered why the AM radio in dad's 1968 Ford worked a hundred times better than AM on any modern unit.

+1

The old cars had AM radios that would pick up stations from several states away and the sound was great. Cars built after the mid-80s seem to have virtually unusable AM radios.

I get excellent Am reception in houston area. I even listen to some AM stations all the way to San antnio. I have the 6disc audiophile in my '04 xlt.

Check the ground on the antenna where it plugs into the radio. A bad ground will give you the kind of problems you are having. Pull the radio and clean up the contacts. Had an F150 that I had to do that with a couple of times.
