Anyone else wish that all turn signals were amber? Seems like more and more vehicles have just the red turn signals, and I can't see the flashing red nearly as well.

It has to do with knowing which is the front and which is the back of the vehicle. Well, at least it use to be this way. I see some have made the change in the rear to amber. But those that do, have to meet a certain criteria as far as how far away the red can be seen and what not, (actually, all manufacturers have to meet a minimum dist ace spec, but the ones with the amber also had to meet a surface area dimension at one point. I am not sure if that rule exists anymore).

I prefer amber turn signals as well. In fact, with the help of a member here, I converted my reverse lights to turn signals and am using an amber bulb. Both brakes lights remain steady-lit while the turn signal is on. Of course, that'll all change as soon as I get around to installing those '57 Buick tail lights of mine....

I agree that the amber turn singnals are more visible, front and rear.

Like Tiger, I have been interested in converting my rear backup lights to ambber turn signals and mounting some fog lights under the rear bumper for backup lights.

No, it isn't.

May try a search for "amber turn signals", search by message text and in the archives.

Basically, what is involved is cutting the wire from your brake light switch before it enters the GEM and combines with the turn signal signal wire(s). You then run a length of wire from the cut brake light switch, from the switch end, to the driver's side rear light. At the lights you cut the MAJOR wire (marked on the connector) on the current brake/turn/tail light. Connect the wire you ran to the cut MAJOR wire, connector side. You then cut the signal wire at the reverse light and connect the harness side of the MAJOR wire to the connector side of the reverse light. Next, you do the same thing to the passenger side, using a bit of wire spliced into the wire you ran from the brake switch.

What you are doing is removing the dual function of the MAJOR signal wire and only retaining the turn signal function on the MAJOR wire. Since you no longer have a brake signal wire, you have to run a new wire for brake lights.

To retain reverse lights, run a wire from the harness side of the cut wire that did run to the hot side of your old reverse light to auxiliary lights mounted wherever you wish.

It takes a bit of time to do, mostly spend hiding your ran wire to make the conversion look neat and tidy.

Tiger,

That sounds pretty much what I planned on doing, except I intented to add some small fog lights under the bumper to act as backup lights. I also intended to add a 2-way switch so I could turn the rear fog lights on through a separate power feed to use as a rear auxillary lights...kind of like that bumper-hitch light.

Did you not hook up any backup lights?
