I have a good handle on most of the MLA stuff.

In this case, I am using works that are within a book compiled of either parts of books are complete short stories within the book.

Specifically, I am doing a report on a short story that Kate Chopin wrote.

My issue is, how do I list it on my cite page.

I have to think I need to list the main book and it's details as well as the title of my work as well as the author of the work.

My question is, what is the layout or format of how it is to be cited???

Here is the normal process for a book;

Book

Okuda, Michael, and Denise Okuda. Star Trek Chronology: The History

of the Future. New York: Pocket, 1993.

Which translates to, Author or authors (last name first). Title Of Book. Where published: Who is the publisher, year published.

Any help would be appreciated....

I checked my reference writing guide from school... I think it may go like this:

Chopin, Kate. "Title if Short Story." Star Trek Chronology: The History of the Future. Ed. Micheal Okuda and Denise Okuda. New York: Pocket, 1993. pg-pg.

This is assuming that the Okudas are in fact editors and not authors. I think if they are authors, leave off the "Ed." The title of the book should be underlined - I don't know if it showed up or not.

The information other than Kat Chopin is not correct info. But,,, I am leaning in the direction you have it laid out as well. If no one else comes up with a better answer, I will go with this format...

Thanks much.

Pink has it correct.

Chopin, Kate. "Title if Short Story." Star Trek Chronology: The History of the Future. Ed. Micheal Okuda and Denise Okuda. New York: Pocket, 1993. pg-pg.

Work in an anthology or compilation:

To cite a specific work in an anthology rather than the entire anthology, indicate first the name of the author of the individual work cited, then the title of that work, then anthology title, then the editor's name, then the edition number, and finally the publication information. The entry closes with the page numbers which are occupied by the anthologized work. The abbreviations "p" or "pp" are no longer used to indicate page numbers: simply present the page numbers as a hyphenated range.

Laurence, Margaret. "The Loons." The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction. Ed. R. V. Cassill. 4th ed. New York: Norton, 1990. 920-929.

Fahnestock, Jeanne. "Teaching Argumentation in the Junior-Level Course." Teaching Advanced Composition: Why and How. Ed. Katherine H. Adams, and John L. Adams. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann, 1991. 179-93.

Coastal, I will give you my MLA book if you would like. I have written so many papers over the years, I just about know the book by heart. That didn't help a couple of years ago when I was working on my Masters and the school wanted papers written in APA style according to The Little Brown Compact Handbook, which was different from MLA in several key areas.

OK, so lets take a look at this...

The main book is LITERATURE; An introduction to fiction, poetry, drama, and writing.

The people the compiled the works and edited it are X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia.

The publisher is Pearson / Longman. Published in New York in 2007

It is the Tenth Edition which I am pretty sure needs to be listed as well.

OK, the actual story within the book is The Storm by Kate Chopin and the pages are 115-119.

Chopin, Kate. "The Storm." LITERATURE; An introduction to fiction, poetry, drama, and writing 10th Edition. New York: Pearson / Longman, 2007. 115-19.

Does this layout look correct based on your thoughts?

Scott, I have owned two MLA books thus far, loaned them out and have yet to get them back. Sooo, if you no longer have a need for it, sure, I would love to have it.

If your OK with that, let me know and I will email my address to you.

Thanks much!!!!

Yes, that looks good. Don't forget to underline the book title.

Send me your address. I can drop it in the mail to you in the morning as I already have a to the PO planned.
