I have spent time in both Chico (went to school there) and in Redding (sister-in-law lives there), and the area has its charms.
Good -
Chico - still small farm town-ish. Not rural anymore, but in Chico as long as you're not in an all college student area (noise parties), it is very nice. I like the atmosphere in Chico much more than Redding. Redding is a bit more big town in nature, and has a redneck / meth head population. Also a lot of Bay area goons who cashed out and bought up a bunch of land.
Both areas are close to the Sierra fothills. Lots of great views, when you can see more then 3 miles (more on that later). You're on flat land in the central valley.
Bad - air quality. Becuse you are in the valley with mountinas on all sides, the air is BAD! Not as bad as Houston, but is nasty in the summer. Lots of dust, smog, fog, agricultural pesticides, etc. Visibility is very limited at times and lasts for weeks on end. The summers are very hot and hazy, the winters cold (but no snow) and hazy. I am a beach and coastal mountain person, and I don't care for it.
Entertainment - The nearest culture is in Sacramento, along with pro basketball. SF is within 3 hours. If you are looking for local, it is mainly fishing and boating the rivers and mountain lakes. Hiking and the forrests close.
It is inland California which might as well be Las Vegas, Reno or Phoenix to me. With Southwest airlines fares I'd rather live in Phoenix or Vegas (similar housing prices, better jobs, more to do) and be an hour flight from LA or SF. You can drive to LA, but at 9 hours, how often are you going to do that? LA to Phoenix only takes 6.
I don't care for it as a place to live.
