Good find. I have tried to resuscitate 2 victims after they drowned in my time as a FF/EMT. Neither time did anyone around them even notice any signs of distress.

A very good piece of information on recognizing individuals in trouble. Just like anything in life it's a matter of experience. A trained lifeguard should be able to recognize a individual in trouble and save them. A very good lifeguard should be in the water beside the individual before they realize they need help. The best lifeguard can recognize the individual that is going to get in trouble when they get out of the car in the parking lot and provide information that can prevent a incident before they ever enter the water.

One should note that recognizing that someone is in trouble and actually being able or capable of doing anything about it are two entirely different operations.

Good to know, although I'm hoping I never have to witness it first hand besides the time I was swimming off Sanibel Island in FL while it was raining (stupid college kid) a wave knocked me over and I got caught in the undertow or something and didn't pop up for 30 seconds or so after my buddy came to the surface. And that was in 2' of water.

On my FIRST dive after becoming Rescue Diver Certified, I pulled a diver from the water and he has no pulse.

I cut his dry suit off and did CPR. Brought him back to life only to be sued a month later for "destroying his dry suit."

He was in the hospital for only two days and suffered no brain damage of any kind. Fortunately for him, the water was very cold. He was missing for 15 minutes.

At any rate, the Judge came out before our case and told him he was going to lose and it would cost him court cost, my personal time from work, and any other cost he could legally incur upon him.

The kid dropped the case and left swearing all the way.

Some people.....

Coastie,

As the old saying goes: No good deed goes unpunished.

You did the right thing, I am sure you would do it again. Some people are just like that. Yes, you did it for him, but we also do the "right thing" for ourselves.

Good for you, and a good thread.

Coastie, He should've realized if you didn't destroy his drysuit he wouldn't have been able to sue you or thank you for saving his life. Don't know what goes through some people's heads. Cost of a dry suit is a heck of a lot cheaper than his life.

At first, I was very pissed off. Then I realized he was just stupid..

And you CAN'T fix stupid...

I have pulled two bodies from the water and was successful in reviving them both.

I have done body recoveries as well, but there was no chance of any reviving for those.

You are right, I would do it again and I would hope someone will do it for me if I am ever in need...
