Going to a laser conference- haven't been since we did road trips for fraternity recruitment in the late 80s! Spending Friday in the TX wine country near Fredericksburg, west of Austin, then the weekend at the Four Seasons. Any one have Austin restaurant/sightseeing tips, esp. Mexican or Tex-mex?

For the best Tex-Mex go to Trudy's. They are the absolute best. For ambiance, make it out to the Oasis on Lake Travis. For BBQ, Artz Rib House. Best burger, Hut's Hamburgers on 6th street. Best place to grab a cold one, Fado's.

I always liked Chuy's restaurant for Tex-Mex, but I haven't been to Austin in years. They opened one here in the North Houston area recently, and it still tastes the same, so I guess the one in Austin hasn't changed much.

it's been a long time but i have been both to chuy,s and the oasis on lake travis and both are great. the oasis also has some great views.

I have fond memories of a KFC there, too! I picked up a bucket of Chicken to take with us to a party at a friend of my girlfriend's. I did it just to bug the Austin elite yuppie vegetarians I knew would be there. My girlfriend was mildly scandalized, but thought it was funny, and we got some major dirty looks when we got there. I thought I would have the whole bucket to myself, but oddly enough the bucket soon emptied, even though you never saw anyone but me with a piece in my hand!
