I took my ST to the shop to mount my new tires, balance them,

align them, and fill them up with nitrogen. All that is running

me at 150 which thats the cheapest price quote i obtained from

that shop out of several that i had called.

but i just received a call from them saying my ball joints need to

be replaced, all four. They said it would cost 700 dollars and thats

including the above services. so about 550 for ball joints and labor.

ugh:angry:angry: And i thought i only needed an alignment and new shocks

which i had in mind of buying the Rancho RS5000 for 165.99

so leaving the question that if anyone has new ball joints for sell,

im interested, just trying to save money

Arturo, Only advice I have is to replace with Moog brand. They are heavier duty than other brands. Also they come with grease zerts. Keep them greased and they may be the last ones you need to buy.

edit; just noticed you do some off roading. I would definitly go with, Moogs.

Agreed tell the shop not to touch them and go somewhere else pr do it yourself....then get the alignment done.

I bet you'll feel like a real douche when your wheel falls off but atleast you'll have nitrogen in your tires.

Seriously don't let those go because when a balljoint fails it there isn't anything pretty about it.

I had to do all mine awhile back while i was at it i did shocks, sway bar endlinks, The upper ball joints were actually new arms, new brake pads ,rotors ,and tie rod ends. It all started from a brokens swaybar endlink and one thing let to another worn part. I got everything moog i could and spent less than $700. That is doing the work myself. Then and alignment at tire plus. If you have a tires plus close by you can go to there web site and print a $20 off coupon and i think the alignment is only $50. The sport tracs have been known to have alot of front end wear on them after awhile acording to the research i have done anyway. If you can do it yourself its all easy work.

No need to go to another shop for a second opinion...just have them physically show you what the problem is. If they won't then they are trying to screw you but if they show the movement in the joints, by the way any movement at all is unacceptable, then they are telling you the truth and for a shop to do the work that proce doesn't sound to terribly bad.

I just had a similar situation with my 01' ST. I had what i thought was bad brakes so i replaced the brakes, tuned out to be bad wheel bearing, so i replaced the wheel hubs, the truck still didn't feel right so i upgraded the shocks (Rancho 5000's) and took it in for an alignment at Firestone. Bought the lifetime alignment deal (there's a Firestone about a mile from my house). They called me back and said my ball joints were bad, all four of them. They gave me a quote of $1400.00! That's not a typo...... $1400.00! I found the Moog ball joints/control arms on Amazon.com all for $208.00 with free shipping, they're not too hard to replace, just get a ball joint press. You can borrow one from Autozone for free, just get the larger size one or the receiver cups wont fit on the joints when you press them back in. Truck feels pretty good now, but i think i'm going to upgrade the sway bar, end links and tie rod ends soon too.

Good luck!!

$550 for upper and lower isn't bad. I was quoted $850 but that is over here and everything is more expensive. Mine are still tight, but the rubber is bad so they will go in time. For $500 including parts, I would let somebody else do it. Ed
