After 4 months of putting up siding (did it myself with my family and none of us do it for a living) I finally finished it off today. All it took was; 4 months, numerous trips to Lowes to get supplies and take back the wrong stuff they ordered, my father-in-law falling off my roof, and putting up the Facia in the rain we had over Labor Day weekend. I give this about 10 wrenches to do. I have a new found respect for anyone that does this for a living.

So what do you think? Not to bad for people not knowing what we were doing.;)

Thanks all!!!

Todd, yeah, we did ALOT of cutting that the contractors weren't going to do. The contractor that came out and gave us an estimate told us he would put it up for $6000 labor. I said I'll do it for that. He also said we would need 18 square to do the job, we used 12 square. (Lowes reimbursted us the other 6 square for a total of $963) This guy was going to take us to the cleaners. He had ALOT of stuff ordered that we didn't need. Lowes actually went back and looked at how many jobs they lost due to his "quotes" (after us informing them about some of the stuff he ordered) and they took him off thier list of contractors. It seems he was costing them just about every siding job they sent him out to.;)

Gotta love that hardiplank. I resided my garage last year with the stuff. Crappy masonite was rotting out. Haven't tackled the house yet but it's coming.

Yeah, you have to watch it with construction contractors. I have a guy coming out to give me an estimate on replacing 6 columns on our front porch. The 8 year old house has the wooden columns rotted at the base...rotted from the inside out as they are hollow, even though I maintained them quite regularly.

The perma-cast replacements will cost just over $1200, including bases, caps, and tax. It's worth $500 labor for me to have someone else put them in...because I figure I can probably put them in myself in about 6 to 8 hours, tops. The only touchy part about the replacement is their will be some vinyl trim work that has to be redone as the caps are slightly bigger than the ones being replaced. If it weren't for that and the fact that I hate doing tedium, I would do it myself.

If the bids come in MUCH more than $500, then I will do it myself anyway.

I have a full-time job as well as a part-time business and lots of work I could be doing for my part-time business. Every hour I spent doing home repair is an hour I'm not doing that part-time work. And, I can make about $90/hour doing that pt work. So, at $500 or less, I'm better off paying someone. Anything much above that and it starts to pay for me to do it.

I'm toying with paying someone to mow my lawn for the first time ever for the same reason...DIY doesn't always save, sometimes it costs more.

Looks very nice. I like your decks. Looks very much like a home I would want to live in (got an extra room lol). Your next project should be central a/c. You will recoup the cost in the savings as window units are power hogs and very inefficient. Your home value will increase. It will just look better and I can tell thats important to you.

Me, that is the project for next year. We try to do one major project a year, and that one is the next I want to get done. Now as for what the wife wants done? Who knows. I was in the middle of doing all of this and she started talking about repainting the master bedroom. I just did that last year!!! That was the last room to need the wallpaper taken off and then paint. The house actually has two decks. One under the rubber roof (that still needs trimed and glued) and than one the same size a step down beside it.

Thanks for all the nice comments all. TJR, hope you get someone to do the pillers for you. I helped my dad do his and of course, the Stonbraker luck had to play a part and it ended up more work than we anticipaited.;)
