My serp belt has started squealing so it is time to replace it. I was checking the idler pulley and it has a little play in it. I can't pull it forward, but I can push it back just a little. Is this normal play or do I need to replace it also?

Also, what is the best attack method for getting to the tensioner? I thought going from under the truck may be easier but looking for some advice before I try.

Thanks,

Matt

A thin profile 3/8" ratchet is all you need. Having a cheater pipe for leverage makes belt removal much easier from above or below. After removal inspect all pulleys for binding. GL

if you have play in the tension pulley. it could be slipping.... my truck chirps at random and goes away an I changed the belt an it was good for 6 months or so. I did read though if the pulley is slipping it will chirp.

MANY have replaced the stock length serpentine belt with a 1/2" shorter belt with great success.

Worked so well it's used on all the 4.0L Gen 2 ST's. Highly recommended, do a search. :supercool:

I recomend the dayco poly cog belt 1/2" shorter.

If you need a new tensoner. Use the gates replacement. It has a flat wound spring. More stable than others that are spring wound..
