My dad retired from DEP and they turned in the Jeep Cherokee's they used for years for the Ford Escape. My dad (who isn't a very small man) loved the Escape. He had to take water samples from surface mining area's and he said the Escape did better on the muddy, rutted, snowed in mining roads better than the Jeep. So I would say that the Escape or it's better looking twin the Mariner would be my choice. As said before, there are alot of used, off lease ones out there for very good prices.
