I posted pics on here a couple weeks ago of my 05' ST that someone totalled for me recently while I was vacationing. Unfortunately, they also had Progressive Insurance. Progressive is now trying to force feed me their own appraisal on my ST that is $2000 less than the Kelley Blue Book price. They apparently have hired their own appraisal company that is more accurate than Blue Book. It's been 3 weeks since the accident, 1 week since they made me give my rental car back, and I still do not have any money from them for my ST. If any of you ever have a wreck with someone who has Progressive Insurance, be on the defense from the moment of the accident, and NEVER sign a waiver at the scene releasing them of medical liability. They are a buch of scam artists...
 
a lady with progressive backed into my rental car in Hawaii. I had all the extra insurance. About an hour after the cops told me Icould leave the scene, Progressive calls me and asks me to make a statement over the phone about what happened. I told the guy "no" and he proceedd to tell me that I had to. Blah blah blah.......I told him "no" again and then I hung up on him.



He calls back telling me it was standard procedure for the other party to tell their side of the accident. I told him "no, have a good day" and hung up.





CALLS back AGAIN! I answer, He tells me his deal again. I tell him " Look, here is my lawyers phone number, any statements made will be made from him"



I hang up call my lawyer and tell him the situation. Progressive calls him.....He tells Progressive to basically shove it up there rears because I was not at fault, which the police report clearly shows and I already told my side of the story to the police. He also told them that it was between Progressive and Budget rent a car's insurance because I paid for all insurance on the rental vehicle. Budget rent a car took care of everything after that. Even gave me a free day with their car. I have not heard a word about since my trip in June.

Well, you should have not signed anything (if you did) nor admit anything before talking to your uwn insurance, and even then procede with caution.



The best of lucks to you, I hope you don't end needing a lawyer.
 
What Progressive is doing is no different then any other insurance company. Your first mistake was giving the rental car back. They have you hurting. Park the rental car in a garage. If they give you what is fair, you give them the car.



Allstate, Nationwide, State Farm, Farmers, and thers all play the same games.

You cant just keep their rental car. And who are "we"as the general public to say what price is fair. We should and do have the right to take it to the shop of our choice. Keeping their car until you get what you want will only get you taken into court, and I doubt a judge is going to side with someone, who, in essence, is stealing a car by keeping it in their garage....





The people who appraise the damage do have a license to do so, just because you dont agree with them is not a reason to keep the rental, lol



 
All Insurance companies do it.. I had the exact same issue with nationwide... I found newspaper ads, dealer adds, and local cars of the same year, mileage, and condition, and mailed it all to them... They wanted to give me 10K for a car that i could not replace for less then 13K. It took 2 months, But they finally gave me what the car was worth...



Then I dropped them, and got another company...

What I am saying is this. Insurance companies have a vested intrest to save themselves money. KBB, Edmunds, Black Book, and NADA are trusted ames in the apraisal business.



My aunt went through something like that. The insurance company would not pay her fairly for damages after they totaled her car. They wanted the rental car back so they can process her claim. She got a new car and called them. You bring me a check for xx.xx and you get the rental car back.



She was fighting them for two weeks prior to that. She had her check in her hand within 24 hours. The full fair ammount. The rental car was used to help persuade them to see what is fair.

Your not suggesting that insurance companies are unscrupulous are you? Tell me it ain't so.

Oh not in any way. They would never play games like "Your car was damaged and I have a car to drive. How long can you wait without a car until you settle for pennies on the dollar?"

Yeah, my first big mistake was returning the rental car...but they had my credit card for accidentals and I didn't want them to start charging it for the unreturned car. What I did do right was not sign the medical waiver after the accident and releasing them of more than $500 liability. I told them to take a hike..I found out the next week I had ligament damage in my neck and back and a fractured rib (rolled over 3 times). I have now hired an attorney and they will not deal with me directly anymore. They said that their policy since I have an attorney is to deal with my attorney only. I told them that is was my vehicle that their customer totalled, and I didn't give a damn what their policy was, they better deal with me and my attorney. My wife and I both are trying to go to Physical therapy and juggle two jobs with one car. I'm going to file a complaint with the state insurance commissioner tomorrow. By the way, their appraiser is not KBB, Edmunds, Black Book, or NADA. It's somthing called Intotal who basically seems to be in bed with the insurance agencies.....I want an impartial appraiser!
 
FWIW, Progressive CEO Peter Lewis is the largest single contributor to the Democrat Party. He gives them even more money than George Soros does. I vote with my wallet more than I do at the ballot box. Just an FYI if you're shopping for insurance companies.
 
Yeah, I saw that about Peter Lewis and I knew I was in for trouble right away. Probably didn't help that I had a big fat "W" sitcker on my back window in the wreck pictures...
 
I realize that now....my insurance is handling all of my medical bills, but the truck was sent to salvage before I realized i should have had my insurance give me the payoff...live and learn. Us good drivers and moral citizens are naive when it comes to this stuff!
 
If you havent settled the PD with them, you can still go through your own carrier, even if Progressive has the truck at a salvage yard. They cannot talk to you about any aspect of the claim once they know you are represented by an attorney unless the attorney tells them they can. In regards to the value of the vehicle, book value is just that. Tons of places (i.e. Carmax) advertise how much less than book value they seel their cars for and you can almost always do better than Carmax when buying a used vehicle.
 
Link from STerrific. Although State Farm did great by me when I totaled my first ST(within 100$). This link was great information to prepare your self for the problems you're having.
 
My brother's wife totalled her 3 week old Acura - someone hit her head on after crossing a median. The other insurance company wanted to fix the car at a total of 22,000 in repair costs. My brother fought that insurance company for a little over a month, and they finally paid to have the vehicle replaced (not repaired).



You can win.. it just takes time, lots of patience, and the unwillingness to give in.
 
You have a "current model" year vehicle purchased new from a dealer. Do not accept the Progressive offer and ask that the claim rep explain to you all of your options. They must explain all of your settlement options under the state's law. You are entitled to fair "replacement" value for your vehicle. Any extras you can forget about. Take them off the truck if Progressive won't pay you for them. Newer vehicles are usually depreciated by a scheduled amount per mile. Example; vehicle cost $30-35k the depreciation is .27 cents per mile. Deduct $1350 from the retail price you paid. You didn't tell us what Progressive's offer was? If you are upside-down on your loan, talk to the bank or dealer to see if you have gap insurance. Best of luck.

I actually trust Consumer Reports on this issue, and they rate American Family Insurance and USAA as some of the best. I have used both and they have awesome service.



Oh yeah, Scott Simon is right. I hae never spoke with the "other guys" company. That is why I have full coverage in the first place. I figure USAA has better lawyers than I could ever afford.

Maybe that's why I am so skewed on my view of insurance... I have had USAA for a long time and most of my friends do to, and I have always had good experiences with them. Friends wife was rear ended and the other guys insurance was messing around.... buddy called USAA and they took care of everything.... including lost time from work, "inconvenience" settlement, and replacing his car... while waiving the deductable. Then they billed the other insurance company :)



I pay my insurance company to protect me and my interests, if they aren't performing for me, I'd get rid of them.
 
The bigger companies like (Pro)Regressive, State Farm, et al almost always have several claims pending on each other. I'm sure in a situation like this they can use leverage with these pending claims to get action done. In the end, the only winners are the insurance agencies.



FWIW, I will never use (Pro)Regressive anyways due to the fact as someone else sated earlier about the liberal policies of the CEO. We have our rights, he has his, I have mine. I now use our local Farm Bureau (saved more than 25% over Progressive) for Home and two cars. I have to pay a $25/year membership fee, but I do get discounts on all kinds of services and goods locally and in the state of Arkansas. We got two infant car seats and a child booster seat for $25 each, which normally ran $40 or more each at Wal-Mart... It's worth while.
