I need help hooking up a Hunter ceiling fan. Wiring is as follows:

House- red wire, black wire, white wire, green wire

Fan- black wire, black/white wire, white wire, green wire

I have a dimmer switch to control the light, normal on/off switch to control the fan. So which wires of the house get hooked up to which wires of the fan? I am confused with the red wire and the black/white wire. Help please!!

:D

Normally the light is controlled by the Red wire, the black controlls the fan. IF this was the way it was normally wired...

With out seeing it and testing with a volt meter My best guess is:

Green to green

Tie all the whites together

Black to black

Black with white to red.

If the house is wired correctly..

Most fans have a blue for the lights not a black with a white stripe...

Hope this helps

If the fixture wasn't wired for it you may have to run an extra wire to the fan if you want to let the switch control the lights and use the fan's pull chain to control the fan. I had to do that when I installed mine.

Be careful! If you have a red wire attached to the wall switch, you have a 3-way switch and the red wire is called a traveler wire that provides a hot lead to each switch. I replaced both 3 way switches with two separate independent switches, one controls the fan and the other the recessed lights in the ceiling.

If you have a red wire at the overhead fixture??? Someone is doing something that is not necessarily up to code???
