My desktop is a compaq 5834, with W/98se. the problem is locking up.

What happens is I get a click sound, the same click you get when you push the power buton to boot up. After it makes that click it freezes. The only thing Iam left to do is shutdown with the power button and reboot. Control +Alt+Del, twice wont help to do a hot reboot. Everything on the computer works fine. It doesnt matter what program Iam using. I have no strange noises from the hard drive. The more times it happens during the day, the longer between times it will happen. sometimes it will happen in 5 min. sometimes 30min. I dont think it is a heat problem, all the fans are working. When it first started, I was getting multiple clicking. That corupted some of the system files. I had to run SFC and rebuild through C\windows\options\cabs. Also I cant walk away from the computer for a few minutes, with just the desktop screen showing. It is froze up when I come back.

I keep it clean of all spyware and viruses, religiously..

Ihave a laptop with XP, I dont like using it. I would like to solve this problem cheaply. The desk top works too damn good, otherwise to junk it....

Thanks for any Ideas were to start, looking..:(

There is a new virus going around that screws up everything just by going on the web, hope you don't have it. I'd have to do some research to get the name of it.

Gary.. this started happening over a month ago. I think I know the virus or worm you are talking about. Iam protected.

FE... I have a CD of WIN98SE with serial if you want it.... let me know. I just went form 98SE to XP in order to get a wireless card to work, and didn't need to in the end, but I am not going back.

Cruzrtwdgt......I may take you up on the offer, if turns out to be a windows problem.

The restore disk that I have from compaq, not only restores windows, but it takes the computer back to factory set up. I would have to backup and restore all my extras and updates. That could turn into a monster of a job. Thanks for the offer, I will keep it in mind..:D

It may be a problem with your power supply. If it is not putting out constant clean power, you will have the problems you mentioned.
