Ok, I got it fixed but had to boot the computer back to "out of the box" configuration. Great stuff.

TJR to answer your question, I already had the newest version, so when I tried to download the vesion again it said it was already on my system.

I have Norton on it now and am alittle worried to put AVG back on. I was having a hell of a time trying to get it to update. It would take forever (on a DSL Modem) and then "time out". After about 5 tries it would finally do it. Anyone having trouble with it? I liked it due to the fact it was a small program and it worked fine till about a week ago. Of course, no viruses showed up on any scan.

Anyway, after getting the computer back up after reboot spent the next couple hours getting all my programs back up and set to what I'm used to. Good fun.

Thanks to all that tried to help. I appreciate it.;)

AVG servers are slow on some occasions but the updates can be manually downloaded from their website and installed if necessary. Personally, I use AVG on my daughter's MS computer (I have made the switch to Mac), used it for years on mine, and found it to be a great product. If it were me (not speaking for anyone else), I would use the AVG over McAfee or Norton. You might wish to consider trying Avast! (freeware which also rates very well). In other words, there are some very good anti-virus products available as opposed to having to pay for them. This would also be a great time for you to consider a backup drive (ext. HD) and imaging software. I used Acronis TrueImage 8.0 and found it to be easy to use and very reliable. That way you don't end up spending a weekend day having to reload software (been there and done that!). It creates an exact image of your hard drive and restores it as was at the time of the last backup. You can also boot from the image with one of their boot disks (it requires you to make a boot disk to be able to boot from the image).

What Teasip said...I use AVG instead of Norton's or McAfee, having dropped those latter products because they take too much system resources AND are flakey. As a matter of fact, I am off to a "clients" to get AVG up and running for her as McAfee has "taken over" her PC.

I probably will put AVG back on but I can't believe my luck. I just got this computer and already having the same problems as the old one. My wife just called (I'm at work) now it's taking a long time to boot and is booting from a diferent area than before. Sweet! Some more crap to figure out when I get home.

I'm in agreement with the other responses. You don't need more than 1 anti-virus program on your PC. I had Norton and you couldn't pay me to put that thing back on my computer, it's too intrusive. Now I use AVG on my DSL connection exclusively and the only time I had a problem downloading they're updates was when I ran more than 1 anti-virus program. My suggestion is to run 1 anti-virus program and keep it updated as well as 2-3 anti-spyware programs also kept updated and you should be fine.

To all AVG users who are having difficulty updating:

I think the AVG update servers are being hit hard as people and the AVG programs installed out there try to download the latest PRIORITY update which is about 5.3 MB. That update came out yesterday and has a new I-Worm variant definition which I think is the worm that is supposed to be gearing up for a big strike on Feb 2nd.

It took SEVERAL attempts to connect to their servers for an update after a new install...most attempts timed out. Just keep trying.

TJR is right about the need for this update.

BTW, I quit using Norton and McAfee years ago. The free version of AVG has worked very well and I recommend it to friends.

edit...I let my scheduler automatically update in the wee hours of the morning. That way, all I have to do is a quick check of it's status to know if it's updated.
