I have AVG Antivirus on my computer. I need to get it removed and when I go to the "Uninstall AVG" it comes up with a screen that says:

Installer initialization failed due to following error:

Undefined error: Initialization of the setup data file failed.

Opening of the setup data file "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\setup.dat" failed.

No such file or directory

I cannot get it to remove at all. My windows isn't recognizing it (saying I'm unprotected) and I can't get a new version to download since i already have a version of it on my computer. I want to remove it completely. How do I do it?

Create a restore point then through regedit delete anything with "Grisoft" and "AVG". Get a second opinion though. Just wondering, is it still running or just showing up in the add/remove list?

This is from the web site that may help you (linked at the bottom of this message).

Hope this helps!

How to reinstall/uninstall or repair installation of AVG?

Open the directory with AVG 7 installed in and run the SETUP.EXE file or download the current installation file of AVG from Downloads-Programs and run it to start installation process. The following screen will be displayed during an installation process:

Add/Remove Components - choose if you want to add/remove some AVG component or reinstall the entire AVG program

Repair installation - this option repairs or reinstalls missing or damaged components of AVG

Uninstall - this option removes the AVG program from your PC

Edit: I did a search on this web site with this in the search box- "No such file or directory"

Since you know where the program is listed on your hard dive, go to the file via MY COMPUTER or right click on START and then select EXPLORE. Once you locate it, right click on the program and select delete from the menu that comes up...

Microsoft makes a great, free program called Windows Installer Clean Up. This will remove the registry settings that the new version is probably finding. If the C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free folder remains just manually delte it afterward. Download and install from the link below.

Stone, when you say it will "not let you get a newer version", what do you mean? I assumed you could get the latest free version from the AVG website and install that and its installation would either fixup or remove your broken installation.
