It appears that my computer UPS died. My computer was off this morning, and pressing the reset button only causes a very faint click and beep. Since I never had one die before, I just want to confirm this is what happens when they die. It is over three years old, so I was expecting it to happen soon. At least I get to use my laptop a little until I get a new one. :)

You should be able to unplug the computer from the UPS and plug it straight into the wall in order to use the computer untill you can get a new ups. I have seen many go bad, with the symptoms you describe.

Or do you mean power supply (inside the computer)? If it's the power supply, you may have to replace it.

My gateway (old 400c) gets tempermental and you have to unplug it from the wall to make it reset sometimes.

take the ups, unplug it and take it apart. you can get to the 12 volt battery which is the size of a car stereo. take that to a battery supplier (interstate batteries, procraft, etc) and for less than $20 you will have a like new ups. you just have to disconnect the pos and neg cable and reconnect when you get the good battery

my ups only switches to battery if the house power goes down...my ups has 2,12v/7ah batterys...I found replacements at Academy sports store...they were the same as some hunters use for their deer feeders....

If your pc wont run off of the ups...probably the spike protection circuit is shot or may just need to be reset....

The UPS uses either a single 12 V battery or 2 12 volt batteries in series (24V). The UPC's themselves usually don't go bad. Batteries from retailers are reasonably expensive. Go on the web and you can get one(s) at a more reasonable price from some Ebay sellers.

My computer works fine. I just found a surge protector I can use temporarily until I get a new UPS. I just wanted to see if it had actually died before I have it picked up in the special hazardous materials pickup next week.

Thank you to everyone who provided their good info. I'll check into replacement batteries, but I'll probably just go for a new model UPS.

NelsonOKC, if you want to see if the unit is OK but the battery is fine do the following.

Open up the unit. Put a battery charger or other 12V power source (assuming a single battery unit) then turn on the UPS. If the unit boots up, passes the selftest, then it is the battery. If not, it is the unit.
