Disposing of old brake rotors

What's the best way to get rid of old brake rotors? It seems a waste just throwing them in the trash. I mean, is there a way I can get cash for all this metal?

Depends if there is a scrap metal place near you. The price per pound fluctuates daily. I used to get a decent buck for my aluminum cans but the place near me closed a few years ago.

Around here I put scrap metal at the street day before trash pic up. We have plenty of scrap metal collectors running around the neighborhood. Actualy I have seen scrap gone after an hour of putting it out.

Friday night a couple weeks ago, I helped my daughter pick up a new washer. When we got it in the basement, I dollied to old one up and out to the alley. I told her "you can call for big item pick-up next week but I'm betting this washer won't be here by Monday" and I went home. She texted me two hours later and said the old washer was GONE! With the sad economy, folks are looking for scrap items to repair to make a buck on.

I just place that kind of stuff in the recycling bin for curbside pickup.

In my city, the WM trash folks won't take car parts in the recycling so i put mine in my Mom's trash(she lives in another nearby city).

Scrap steel goes for between 100 to 200 a short ton. Essentially 5 to 10 cents a pound. If your rotors weigh 30 lbs, you are looking at about 1.50 to 3.00 for a rotor from the scrap yard.



You would end up spending more money on gas to get money out of it than you would throwing it away.

when i bought my new ones i took the old ones back to oreilys and they took them and put in a scrap bin

Where I live, we cannot throw car parts in our trash. We can take them to the city's recycling center, but we don't get any cash for these items. Local junk yards wil not take loose car parts either. They only want the whole car with a title...I guess so they cannot be accused of dealing in stolen parts...which is understandable.



As previously stated, scrap steel/iron is almost not worth the trip to a scrap yard unless you have a lot more scrap to take with you.

Put a rotor into an old wheel and tire, run a pipe into the spindle hole, bolt a light set onto the other end of the pipe, and presto!, instant portable light! Just lean it over and roll it to wherever you want it. Cut several holes in the top of the tire and fill it with concrete if you need more weight. We used to do that for portable volleyball net supports.
