Does anybody remember real Service Stations?

I remember in the first "Back To The Future" when M.J. Fox walks into the 1955 town and looks kinda baffled when a car pulls in to the gas station and five guys swarm it and do everything.

Minimum wage and high gas prices put the kibosh on all that though. Also pretty much everyone I've known who worked at a gas station got robbed at some point.

This reminds me of the skit some comedy show (I think it was "Mad TV") did a few years ago. It was a send up of those public service announcements that celebrate "Black History Month". It was celebrating when a black man (who had a name in the skit--I don't remember what it was) invented the self-service gas station. How'd he do it? He was a pump attendant at a gas station, but just wanted to sit around and be lazy. So when a car (driven by a white person, of course) pulled up, and the driver asked him, "Excuse me, can I get a fill up?", he replied, "Get it your own damned self!"

And the concept of a gas station was changed forever. :)

Now we pay $3.11 or more a gallon and nobody does anything for you except take your money, and they call it progress. Isn't progress wonderful.

Yeah, but you can get an orange slushy now. That's real progress.
