Our son would like a new "trigger" trombone when he starts high school next year. Conn 88 is his first choice..does anyone know what a fair price would be for a new instrument? I found one place in Calf for under $1800. I've been looking at Ebay but no luck so far for anything in good shape used. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Actually, I played Trombone in school. $1800 is fair, as trigger trombones are little less common to come by. However, if your son is planning on playing in the marching band, I would probably suggest keeping his current one for to use for the field.

Trigger trombones are NICE to have for someone who has played for years. It's like cheating. :)

I played for many years... Mostly Jazz, I also played Contra Bass with the Blue Devils Drum and Bugel Corps back in the late 70's and early 80's

as they say "LOW BRASS KICKS ASS"

I dont play much anymore but still pull my valve trombone out and occasionally one of my two turn of the century 1900-1920 Silver Conns out.

Is he looking to play a bass trombone or a Tenor with an F attachment?

If he has a current tenor of a known quality brand you might be able to just purchase the F attachment.

But with a student trombone you should be able to get one for much less than $1800.00

If you are lookin at symphony/concert grade equipment, i would try to make that investment after he gets his musical direction this year, he will have many options to chosse in high school.

You could also query the local Symphony or Musicians union to see if there are any good horns for sale.. or Craigslist...

King and dynasty also put out some very nice equipment..

Thanks..yes, he plans on keeping his Bach trombone for marching band. Tenor with an F attachment is what he wants..for concert/competitions, etc.

Had a Conn 88H in high school and college; 40 years ago. Payed $385 in 1967 and sold it for $400 in 1976. Still have my first trombone, a York that I got in 6th grade. I used that one in marching band. Got slammed twice during turns and soldered the slide back together twice using a propane torch and solder in my dorm room. The 88H is a fine instrument. Wonderful sound and hard to find and expensive. Don't you dare ever let him use it while marching....NEVER! Best of luck to your son with his music. Even after 40 years, still remember those days as some of the best.

What I remember about the band.........that they continued to play during a football game while we were trying to score. They were just outside the end zone that we were trying to punch one into. You would think at a home game the band would be ON your side.

I had to do the official flapping of the arms to try to get them to stop but to no avail.

I do not remember the outcome of that drive or that game...blame that on too many shots to the head.

I still have my wife's sax and all my drum sticks and keyboard mallets from high school and college.

I made the pit for the Anaheim Velvet Knights in 1995, but had to drop for financial reasons....
