I building a box for two 8's it's going to be sealed, is there any downfall to having them share one sealed enclosure space instead of putting up a divider? Obviously not dividing will be easier to build, but am I going to sacrifice quality or volume by doing so?

I would think it would hurt both sound and quality. There's L and R for a reason. It would only be one more piece to make it into a dual chamber enclosure, and I bet it's worth the work.

It will tend to act like 1 speaker of the combine size with less quality, if you wire them together. Many home theater floor speakers use this type of cabinet (i.e. 3-way cabinet with 4 or 5 speakers). Uses less floor space, gets bigger boom. I would port it, but only because they usually do.

I actually have been doing some more research since asking the question and it's mixed responses.

General consenses is that as long as they are the same sub and you have them on a bridged or mono amp it will be fine. People argue back and forth but no one really says anything to prove one way or the other.

So I'm going to build a single chamber box and then I'll let you all know how it turns out

Just because they are in the same box doesnt mean they will sound "bad" or "poor". I'm sure it'll still sound great, but since they are sharing the same box, you will only be sacrificing a little...probably not enough to notice a difference.

You should have a divider seperating the two chambers. The reason why is if one sub were to fail then sound quality would not be compromised. The box would be built as .9cu/ft for 2 subs and that would be too large for one 8.

p.s. just wondring where you plan on putting this. I am interested in putting another 8 under my seat, but I don't think my dimensions will fit

The chances of only one sub failing on a mono amp are going to be very slim (not saying not possible just something really weird would have to happen) and in the case that one did fail, the box is still within spec for a single 8. The range on them goes from 0.5 to 1.2 and the single chamber will be 1.0

Its going to be installed behind the seats, with an amp on each side of the subs. I'll post pictures when done, the box is in the work right now. I should receive the subs on monday (Kicker Comp 8's) and then I just have to talk the wife into letting me get the other amp early. :p

I have been argued this sooo many times it is crazy..... but simple numbers will show. seperate chamber boxes with multiple woofers will not provide as high of numbers as a common chamber box. when 2 or more woofers are working together to resonate a certain frequency they produce more noise. But if your into SQ then seperate chambered boxes is the way you want to go, because the bass will be much tighter, and not as boomy.

If you look in my picture library I have box designs fora dual 10" enclosure for 2 rockford fosgate P1' 10's for underneath the rear seat.

Probably the biggest issue with a single chamber will be if one sub gets damaged the remaining sub will not operate properly. Not due to damage but due to enclosure volume, removing the damaged sub for repair and the like. There may be some volume(loudness) and frequency differences but more than likely they will be negligible unless your competing.
